  • It’s wintertime in Japan! And what can you expect during this season? Snow, of course! Lots of snow! This, however, shouldn’t stop you from traveling and having fun. Here are three things you can do for a fascinating winter experience in Japan!

    1. Visit the famous World Heritage Site, Shirakawa-go

Located in Gifu Prefecture, Shirakawa-go is a village located at the foot of Mt. Haku with a river running through it. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. When you visit this place, it really feels like you have discovered a winter wonderland! So pretty!

In the village are traditional Japanese farmhouses that are still standing. Some of these farmhouses, also known as “gassho-zukuri,” are more than 200 years old. These houses were all handmade and their architectural designs were developed through generations. The thatched roofs were made with no nails but are strong enough to endure heavy snow.

There are other places in the area where you can appreciate the village and learn about its history such as the three oldest houses, Myozenji Temple and its bell tower, and the viewpoint.

    2. Try skiing and snowboarding at Hakkaisan Ski Resort

Skiing and snowboarding are two of the things adventurers want to try when going to a place filled with heavy snow. The Hakkaisan Ski Resort located in Niigata, also referred to as the “Snow Country,” is known to be a hidden treasure trove of Japan.

Here, you’ll get to see impressive skiers and snowboarders taking the lift to the top and then dancing in the snow-filled mountain. It’s a bit hard for beginners, and the ski and boards are a bit heavy, too, but it is so fun to try!

Additionally, the resort is free of charge for students of the International University of Japan so if you know someone from there, you can tag along. Plus, if you have your own gear, you really have nothing to pay for! Awesome, right? There is also a restaurant inside the resort in case you want to warm up and rest.

Okay, just to get it straight, Tokyo Disney Resort is actually not located in Tokyo but in Chiba. For those who are not that into riding attractions, you can still enjoy this place and its atmosphere.

Tokyo DisneySea offers a lot of exciting shows and experiences, especially during the winter and holiday seasons. Here, you can watch Mickey and friends’ show inside the Broadway-inspired theater, Goofy and friends in their street performance, or watch sea shows with different themes and Disney characters. You can also experience a “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” or ride a gondola for a romantic experience.

Many articles will tell you how fun and exciting it is to visit Tokyo DisneySea, but you will never really know how much enjoyment it offers until you go and experience it firsthand.
