In the middle of Saitama Prefecture lies a park that is based on Moomintroll, a beloved cartoon character in Japan. Moomintroll is the main character in the books by Finnish author Tove Jansson.
The story has been adapted into an anime series in Japan and has gained popularity ever since, with several cafes, theme parks, and merchandise. If you would like to enter and experience the world of Moomin, then Akebono Children’s Forest Park is the perfect place to visit!
Akebono Kodomo no Mori Koen or Akebono Children’s Forest Park is a park that is based on the story of the Swedish cartoon character, Moomintroll and his parents, Moominpapa and Moominmama. Because of that, the park has been dubbed as the “Moomin Theme Park”. In September 1991, the park was designated by the national government as the “Heisei Memorial Children’s Forest Park.”
Located to the north of Tokyo in Saitama Prefecture, the park is a perfect getaway from the city. The park is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM every day, but they do close on national holidays. Entrance to the park is currently free.
Please note, the park is, at the time of publishing, under renovations and is closed until March 31st, 2018. The schedule can be checked on their official calendar which can be found here (Japanese only).
Before exploring the park, visitors have to remember some rules that have to be strictly followed. Before entering the buildings, shoes must be removed and placed in the shoe cabinets. It is allowed for people to eat outside, but food and drinks are not allowed inside.
Since this is a park where families gather, smoking is also strictly prohibited. To maintain cleanliness, trash bins can be found throughout the park.
