Kyary Pamyu Pamyu (きゃりーぱみゅぱみゅ) is a notable Japanese celebrity due to her colourful, strange fashion sense and music videos. She is also known as the Asian Lady Gaga. Being so popular, it is no surprise that she cannot escape from some controversies.
Kyary Pamyu Pamyu was once slammed for wearing a giant ribbon on her head to an interview at Music Station. The huge ribbon blocked the faces of Kanjani8 members from being seen on camera, thus resulting in angry fans of Kanjani8 who criticized Kyary’s choice of fashion which was deemed to be outrageous and inconsiderate. She then apologized to fans of Kanjani8 and stated that she would be more careful about her choices of clothes the next time she attends a program where there would be other celebrities.
Kyary once tweeted that Taylor Swift does not sing well. Kyary is a friend of Katy Perry and they both have expressed admiration to one another. It is well-known that Katy Perry and Taylor Swift have a major beef with each other so could that be the reason why Kyary dissed Taylor? Who knows, Taylor might soon write a song about Kyary!
Despite the rule by FNS Kayosai that the performers are not allowed to lip-sync, Kyaru Pamyu Pamyu was seen to be clearly lip-syncing in her performance which caused her to receive a lot of flak from netizens. It is pretty inappropriate to criticize Taylor for poor singing when you have been lip syncing, Kyary!
When asked of her opinion on AKB48’s scandal in which Minami Minegishi (峯岸みなみ) ’s shaved her head bald in order to seek forgiveness, Kyary stated that the lives of Japanese idols are very restricted and they could not date freely. She also criticized the job nature of female idols which is to please men while she stated that she herself is more like an artist than an idol. That is a pretty bold statement by Kyary as the definition of idol is rather broad. In fact, some people would consider Kyary as an idol.
In 2013, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu posted New Year’s Greeting images on Twitter where she was seen posing with the Rising Sun Flag. Unfortunately, the photos angered many Korean fans till she had to cancel her tour to South Korea. The flag was an old Japanese Rising Sun flag which was deemed controversial and insensitive to Japan’s war victims.
Thus, sums up some of the controversies sparked by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. In my opinion, they were not severe at all! Pretty minor, in fact I think most people forgotten about them soon after the controversies happened.
