Fruits Basket is one of the anime that had left a mark on my heart during my childhood. I was only a teen when I first learned about this magnificent anime (TV series) and manga (book). Fruits Basket is about a teenage girl, coping with her mother’s death and getting involved with a cursed family. You will come across a variety of hardships that the different characters comprising Fruits Basket go through. The manga written by Natsuki Takaya has 23 volumes, while the anime, which was directed by Akitaro Daichi, has 26 episodes. I greatly suggest for you to both read the manga and watch the anime. Although the anime series is not complete yet, and different from the manga, both have inspired and impressed me.
The main character of Fruits Basket, Tohru Honda, is coping with the loss of her mother from a car accident. She decides to live with her grandfather but has to move out again due to renovations in their home and unwelcoming relatives. She has nowhere to go, so the young lady decides to live in a tent in the forest instead.
Tohru then finds herself in a house in the middle of nowhere. There, she runs into her popular classmate, Yuki Sohma and Yuki’s cousin named Shigure. Days pass and Tohru also meets another cousin named Kyo. However, Yuki and Kyo are not getting along well. They continue to damage the home during their fights. One fine day, Tohru discovers something important regarding the Sohma family. She realizes that members of the family transform into the 12 Chinese Zodiac Animals once they are hugged or touched by the someone of the opposite sex. What’s more, they sometimes also transform once they are weak, tired or uncomfortable.
The book range of Fruits Basket has 23 volumes. Yes indeed, the manga’s really worth reading since the main plot will teach you different family and friendship values. Tohru unexpectedly enters the life of the Sohma family. With this unforeseen meeting, Tohru might have the ability to break their curse. I greatly suggest for you to read the whole manga series to find out if she manages!
The anime series of Fruits Basket has a total of 26 episodes. The manga is still on-going while the anime is already airing. Even when you are already reading the manga series and know the plot, the anime is still worth giving a shot since you can see from a different angle. There are similarities and differences between the books and series. As you often see with books that turned into series or films, the anime is lacking some important parts that the manga does have. But, I greatly suggest for you to watch the anime as well because of the perspective, if you are a fan you will be happy to see the stories from a different angle!
