Satsukiyama: A Hidden Treasure in Osaka

Satsukiyama: A Hidden Treasure in Osaka

Mount Satsuki or Satsukiyama(五月山), located in Ikeda City, Osaka has more to offer than just a mountain area. There is a nice park, better known as Satsukiyama Park (五月山公園) and Satsukiyama Zoo (五月山動物園) as well.

First, let me introduce Mount Satsuki. This mountain is around 320 meters tall and is connected to the Minoh waterfall area by the hiking trails. If you’d like to enjoy the view of Ikeda city, why not try hiking up to the observatory areas (展望台)? There are a few, so, you don’t have to hike all the way up to the summit if you don’t want to. In addition, in the middle of August, there is an annual firework event (猪名川花火) held in the Ikeda area. I would personally say that one of the best views is from Mount Satsuki. There will be professional photographers with their awesome cameras waiting to take the picture of the firework event so you know you are in the right spot! Be there at least 90 minutes in advance to get a nice viewing spot.

Secondly, Satsukiyama Park. This park is located at the foot of Mount Satsuki, so even if you don’t want to hike all the way up to the summit, you can still enjoy the sight at the park area. Particularly in autumn, the sight is beautiful with the presence of maple leaves (もみじ).

While there, you must not miss checking out Satsukiyama Zoo. It is not a very big place but still, it is great for family outings. Little kids would just love seeing all the different animals there such as rabbits, goats, kangaroos and horses. Don’t forget to check out if the mascot of Ikeda city, the cute little wombats are there or not. I went there twice and managed to see them once. Good luck! They are really cute.

Lastly and most importantly, there is no entrance fee for any of the places mentioned. Isn’t that great?. To reach the Satsukiyama area, follow the signboards from Hankyu Ikeda station. The walk should take around 20 minutes.
