Imari Porcelain carries a variety of designs like natural and seasonal motifs and even as the most simple design patterns colored in indigo blue. Over time, many artisans have refined the traditional techniques which are being used and Imari ware is also the pioneer in Japanese porcelain.
The term Imari Yaki refers to the porcelain made in the vicinity of Imari and Arita in Saga and these Imari wares started around 400 years ago. Between the mid 17th century to the first half of the 18th century, Imari wares were extensively exported to Europe and have reached other parts of the world through the port of Imari.
In Japanese cuisine, presentation is as important as the taste of the food. And establishments which use Imari wares for their food enhances the appeal of the Japanese cuisine. And there are two main categories of Imari ware which are Iroe and Sometsuke.
The Sometsuke is designed by using only indigo blue color on a white porcelain and the sometsuke is the earliest imari ware that was made in Japan. Iroe, on the other hand, is decorated in vibrant shades of colors and often with natural and seasonal motifs. Since Iroe means colored picture in Japanese, this makes a lot of sense! After the Iroe has been baked, black and red outlines are then applied to the design.
