This is one of the oldest hot spring hotels in the world and is located in Hayakawa, Yamanashi Prefecture of Japan. It was founded in 705 AD and received recognition as the oldest hotel in the world by the Guinness World Records in 2011.
Many visitors are drawn to this place every year due to the healing properties of its hot spring bath.
Its name was derived from the Keiun era when it was founded by Fujiwara Mahito. Due to its healing properties, many townsfolk and military men, as well as samurai and shoguns, became patrons of the place. Also, because of the spring’s free flowing nature, it is popular and visited by many. The hotel has been passed from one generation to the next for centuries and continuously embodies the unchanging hospitality of the Japanese spirit.
The hotel has a free-flowing spring bath subdivided into six baths: 4 open-air baths and 2-indoor baths. Spring water properties include the following: sodium, calcium nitrates, chloride spring with low alkaline properties. Some people claim that the spring provides positive effects on lowering gastrointestinal disorders, muscle pain and constipation.
Most rooms are furnished with Japanese decorations and tatami mat floors. These are quite luxurious with great views of Hayakawa and Yukawa ravines. Rooms are presented as standard room, suites with free-flowing open-air bath (Notoridak and Kitadake), a guest room with a moon-viewing platform (Sukiya-zukuri) and a suite with total-hinoki free-flowing guestroom bath.
Dishes are served in the Mountain Kaiseki Banquet which offers high quality cuisine made by expert chefs. Together with precious dinnerware, dishes are served warm or cold depending on the season. You can also enjoy Koshu beef’s soft texture in the restaurant.
