Utada Hikaru (宇多田ヒカル) is one of the most prominent artists in the Japanese music industry. She has been away from the music scene for several years now but many fans are still awaiting her return. The good news is that she will be releasing new music in 2016!
In August 2010, Utada Hikaru announced her indefinite hiatus starting in 2011, as she wanted to take a break from her career and resume ‘personal life activities’ which had been lacking due to being heavily involved in the music industry from a very young age. During her hiatus, she married Francesco Calianno in May 2014 and gave birth to a baby boy in July 2015.
On top of that, during her hiatus, she was also faced with the tragic death of her mother, Keiko Fuji, who was suspected to have committed suicide by jumping off the 13th floor of an apartment.
Previously, there were rumors that Utada would be releasing a new album in spring 2016 which brought about a lot of excitement for many fans. However, the rumors were dispelled by her father, Utada Teruzane, who confirmed on Twitter that even though Utada Hikaru is currently working on new music, its production is still not at a stage in which the release date can be determined.
Despite this disappointing news, Utada Hikaru will be releasing a new song in April 2016 which will be the theme song for NHK‘s drama called ‘Toto Nee-chan’. Utada revealed on her Twitter page on the 20th of January 2016 that she was working on one more line of the song for the drama which will be aired on the 4th of April 2016
So, fans of Utada Hikaru will, at least, have a song to look forward to this year. Even though Utada will not be releasing an album in spring, it is possible that she will be releasing it in the latter part of 2016. Very exciting for fans so let’s hope for the best!
