  • Nodame Cantabile is a slice of life and romantic comedy manga series by Tomoko Ninomiya. It was serialized in Kodansha’s magazine Kiss which is meant for mature female readers, for a total of nine years from 2001 to 2010. In 2004, the manga received the Kodansha Manga Award for the best shojo manga. The series has been adapted into movies, dramas, and anime. Additionally, three video games have been released based on the series.

    The Storyline

In the story, Shinichi Chiaki is an arrogant but talented musician who is the cream of the crop at Momogaoka College of Music. He is a perfectionist who is very critical of himself and others. He plays the violin and piano well and aspires to go to Europe to play among the elites. Alas, his ambition is hindered by his phobia of airplanes and the ocean. Thus, he has no choice but to remain in Japan. During his fourth year at university, he meets Megumi Noda, or Nodame, who seems like a sloppy and eccentric girl. However, he is impressed when he hears her play the piano. Nodame is one who prefers to play by ear rather than following the musical scores. Nodame ends up having feelings for Shinichi but he seems dismayed about it.

    Release of New Chapter

The series ended in 2010 and now, after more than 5 years, there is a new chapter of Nodame Cantabile which was a one-shot project. The chapter appeared on the April Issue of Kiss which went on sale on the 25th of February 2016. The story in the chapter will be set in a time period after 5 years had passed and is focused around Nodame who is about to reach the age of 30.

Even though this is a one-shot project, fans of Nodame Cantabile are glad to see the brief return of the series. Fans will be happy to see their favorite characters, Nodame, and Shinichi, again. Perhaps if the chapter is met with many demands, there will be more chapters to come!
