It is no secret that cats are loved in Japan. From the multitudes of cat cafes and cat-inspired costumes, cats are popular pets that Japanese find cute. In honor of cats, there is also a Cat Day which is celebrated every year in Japan on the 22nd of February. More often than not, cats are treated like the kings and queens they are. Therefore, it may seem strange that a cat cafe would get suspended in Japan. However, there is a very good reason for the said suspension.
While in Japan, pets including cats are generally treated well. Unfortunately, there are always some individuals who do not treat pets as well as they should. It may be expected that those who open cat cafes should have some affection for cats at least to be able to handle having so many cats in the cafe, but it’s too bad that Neko no Te fails in that expectation.
Neko no Te, in Tokyo, is cat cafe which also functions as a pet shop. It was found that the living conditions of the cats at the cafe were not up to standard. The issue was mainly about the health of the cats which were neglected due to the lack of hygiene and nutritious food. Thus, on the 21st of April 2016, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Bureau of Social Welfare and Public Health had ordered for the cat cafe to be suspended for a total of 30 days, which means the cafe will be suspended until the 20th of May 2016.
It is great that the government of Japan is concerned about the welfare of cats and has strict rules on cat cafe owners. The suspension will hopefully make other cat cafe owners to be more responsible, take care of the cats properly and not neglect the needs of the cats until they become unhealthy. A place with well-treated and healthy cats is good for business too, as they would look happier and be more attractive to customers! What do you think about this news?
