Experience These 3 Ways To Transform Yourself Into a Japanese Warrior!

Have you ever watched old fashioned action movies and wished you could be a hero just like them? I know I always do. I love watching martial arts movies where the heroes save the day, and ride horses and forge their own special weapons. So when I came to Japan, I was determined to turn into a warrior hero myself. Read here how I did that, and how you can do this, too!

Forge Your Own Weapon

Every fantasy novel I read, or martial arts movie I watch features fantastic weapons that the hero can use to vanquish any villains that happen to be in their way. I had always wanted to forge my own weapons but was sure this was something I would never be able to do. Until I found this experience on GoVoyagin that allowed me to make my own knife in a real blacksmith’s shop in Gifu. The host met us at the train station and took us to his own blacksmith shop. There, he guided us through all the steps necessary to craft your own knife. Everything is done by you, from the design to the hammering and the details in the end.

To make the experience even more special, the host and his wife will prepare a lovely lunch for you that consists of fresh sashimi and home made beer. They both speak excellent English, and will help you with any questions about the experience. The host makes samurai blades for a living, so you know he’s a real expert on blacksmithing. At the end of the day, your arms may ache a little and you’ll feel a little hot, but you’ll also be so proud that you just created your very own knife from a plain block of steel.

Yabusame: Horseback Archery

If you really want to feel like a true warrior, then shooting an arrow from horseback comes pretty close! Before doing this I had never ridden a horse, so I was a little nervous to do so whilst holding a bow and arrow, but the staff were very helpful and helped me to feel calm. First, we had an archery class to practice shooting the arrows at a target and get our technique right. Then, we jumped onto our horses and had some practice runs without the weapons. Then came the moment of truth. There was a target for us to hit as we galloped past, and I came very close after my first few tries, but didn’t quite hit it yet this time!
