Do you ever think, “Man, I wish I could do that!” when you watch Naruto? In feudal Japan, a ninja, otherwise known as shinobi, must learn to fight with agility and strength, slipping in and out of missions while remaining practically invisible to their foes. Becoming a true ninja takes years of dedicated and specialized practice, but everyone has to start somewhere. If you want to experience some ninja training, just head out to Ninja Academy in Nara Prefecture!
If you were expecting that this is your one-way ticket to gain the ability to summon large animals out of thin air, I’m afraid that’s not possible. You can experience the next big thing, tough! At Ninja Academy, you can basically learn what the actual Japanese ninjas were like, try out their weapons, and train for yourself.
For beginners, you might want to try out their one-day course which would last you a good six hours of action-packed training. Your sensei will teach you the basics on the proper handling of five different ninja weapons, namely shuriken, blow-dart, sword, gun, and bow and arrow.
Finally, you can try your hand at throwing some shuriken! At the academy, you are provided with targets to practice with and maybe even a picture of some anime characters from Naruto.
You’ll get the ultimate training to become a stealthy assassin with the help of some blowdart training. Make sure to aim it at your target!
To build up your strength, you will undergo some sword training and you’ll get the chance to use an actual sword as you try to cut through your target which is made of thick tatami mats.
Next will be archery and finally, guns! It is quite surprising that ninjas actually used firearms all the way back until the end of Edo Period. As expected from ninjas, they would use just about anything that would get the job done.
Ninja Academy is open every weekend from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. You can avail a one-day course that costs around 3,500 Japanese Yen with lunch (udon and rice balls) included. Note that a single session lasts for approximately six hours. A two-day course is also available upon request.
Who says that ninjas no longer exist? Now, you can shun away those naysayers and prove them wrong. Enroll in a class at Ninja Academy and discover another side of yourself that you never knew existed. Who knows? You might just learn how to jump across tall buildings while throwing real life shuriken!
