One of the most haunted abandoned sites in Japan is located in the region of Okinawa. In here lies the Nakagusuku Kogen Hotel (中城高原ホテル) which is apparently an unfinished building built by the Nakagusuku Park Association. The association spent millions of money but ended up abandoning it. Let’s find out why.
Expo ’75 was held on the island of Okinawa to commemorate the handing over of Okinawa to Japan by the Americans. To take advantage of the event and the beautiful location, the Nakagusuku Kogen Hotel was built by the Nakagusuku Park Association. Added to this was also a great chance for tourists to visit the place as it was sitting next to Nakagusuku Castle Ruins, a fortress built in the early 15th century. However, many locals did not agree to the building of the hotel there since they wanted to protect the Castle Ruins. This conflict became popular all over Okinawa. Then finally, the association decided to move the place of construction far from it. But even before the expo was held, the company in charge of the construction went bankrupt and the access to the hotel is now restricted since that area is under cultural properties protection. The hotel is now abandoned and it is said that many people have seen ghosts, especially of a little boy, here. As such, it has become one of the famous ghost spots in Japan.
Other than the mentioned story above, there are other tales related to the hotel ruin’s background story. Another one is based on a rumor stating that the hotel was actually used for several years before being abandoned. It is now sitting empty and overgrown with several vegetations. The place is actually gigantic and fascinating, though it is not really a tourist destination. There are some people, particularly urban explorers, who explore the premises in search of a better story or adventure.
There are so many abandoned places that you can find in Japan but this one is something interesting to look at. The place is located 50 meters from the walls of Nakagusuku Castle which is quite accessible.
Please note, however, that this area cannot be accessed since the building is very old and unstable. But feel free to look at it from the outside!
