It has become a norm and a way of pleasing fans to open cafes with the themes of their favorite manga, anime, or movies. Usually, the cafes are opened for a limited period of time only which causes fans to be more excited about them. They can’t wait to try them out in hopes that they don’t miss out on them! Two new cafes based on March Comes in like a Lion (3月のライオン) and Ted are some of the latest themed cafes that you can try out in Tokyo, Japan.
Not everybody has heard of the manga and anime series March Comes in like a Lion so here is an introduction to the series. Alternatively, the series is also called as “3gatsu no Lion.” It is an ongoing manga series which has already been adapted into anime. The manga was created by Chica Umino in 2007 whose other works include Honey and Clover, Sora no Kotori, and Hoshi no Opera. Honey and Clover is the manga artist’s most recognized work which earned her a Kodansha Manga Award in 2003.
March Comes in like a Lion is serialized in Hakusensha’s seinen manga magazine Young Animal. To date, there are 12 volumes of the manga. The manga was adapted into an anime series which premiered last October 2016 on NHK and will have a total of 22 episodes. Besides that, there is also a two-part live-action film adaptation which will be released in March and April 2017.
In March Comes in like a Lion, the protagonist is Rei Kiriyama, a 17-year-old adolescent who just began to live on his own and who earns a living by being a professional shogi player. He does not have a real family as his parents and sister passed away due to a traffic accident. After which, he was taken care of by his father’s friend named Koda. Rei became Koda’s apprentice in shogi and has been a professional shogi player since he was in middle school. His talent makes him one of the most promising players of his generation.
After completing middle school, however, Rei decided not to continue with high school and to live an independent life away from Koda instead. Even though he lives an independent life, it is shown that he is not emotionally mature. Rei has hardly any friends, and among his few friends are the 3 Kawamoto sisters named Akari, Hinata, and Momo.
While March Comes in like a Lion is a series centered on the life of a young professional shogi player, there have been various foods featured in the series. So far, a total of 18 different food items were shown in the manga so it is as if food is one of the themes of the story.
Examples of the food available at the cafe are Akari’s Special Pork Curry, The Kawamoto Sisters’ Favorite All-Topping Anmitsu, Nya’s Paw Print Cookie, Garlic Toast & Tuna Macaroni Salad, and Akari’s Special Melty Stewed Pork with Rice.
The March Comes in like a Lion Cafe will be opened until December 30, 2016, so you still have time to visit the cafe!
Ted is a 2012 American comedy film featuring a walking and talking teddy bear as its main character. The movie stars Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis as the lead characters, with the direction of Seth MacFarlane who is also the voice actor for Ted, the teddy bear.
Ted tells the story of a young John Bennett who wished for his new Christmas present, a teddy bear named Ted, to be able to walk and talk and become his friend. As he made the wish, a shooting star appeared which made his wish come true. Fast-forward to the future, John and Ted are aged 35 and 27 respectively and are still best friends. They live a self-indulgent lifestyle and Ted has turned out to be an uncouth teddy bear that would curse swear words and smoke bong. John is in a relationship with 28-year-old Lori Collins who hopes to marry him but is worried that their relationship could not progress if John continues to stay with Ted. While John is hesitant about making his best friend leave, he also understands Lori’s point of view.
Needless to say, when it comes to cute characters, Japan will be the first country to love them. Hence, it is no surprise that Ted has a huge fanbase in Japan! The film opened at number one in Japan in January 2013. Its final market of $4.5 million means that Ted is the best start for an R-rated comedy in Japan.
The film won several awards such as the International Film Music Critics Association Award for Best Original Score for a Comedy Film and a Jupiter Award for Best International Film in 2012. There was also a sequel to the movie, Ted 2, which was released in June 2015 (Japan release: August 2015). Japan even made the effort to tone down the language in Ted 2 to make it suitable to be watched by kids as young as 12 years old!
As Ted is quite popular in Japan, there is a pop-up bar and cafe dedicated to his fans which is located in the Shibuya District of Tokyo. As the dishes are designed around the teddy bear, they are cute and pleasing to the eyes!
Among the food offered at the cafe and bar are the Ted Face Pizza and the Hamburger and Steak Plate. The lunch time sets also have cute names like Party Bear Set, Naughty Bear Set, and Teddy Bear Set.
Like many other specialty cafes, they also sell original Ted merchandise such as tumblers, bags, and plush toys. As it is not only a cafe but also a bar, it is open from 11:00 until 3:00 am. Therefore, adults can hang out at the bar and have a fun night out! There is no specific date as for until when the cafe will be available, but according to their official website (Japanese only), it will last for about two months from their opening date which was September 21, 2016. So most probably, the ted Cafe & Bar TOKYO 2016 will be only available up until November 2016.
Don’t miss out on these special themed cafes especially if you are fans of them! Even if you have not watched the series or the movie, it will be worth your time to check out the cafes as they are only available for a limited time period. So what are you waiting for?
