When foreigners think about Japan, the representative Mt. Fuji (富士山) may first come to mind. When most visitors plan to see Mt. Fuji, they may imagine Yamanashi Prefecture (山梨県) as a destination to see Japan’s most famous landmark. However, there is another area – Shizuoka Prefecture (静岡県) – where visitors can enjoy not only seeing Mt. Fuji, but also some other great activities that many travelers do not know of.
Shizuoka is actually an easily accessible location from the main stations in Tokyo, such as Shinjuku Station (新宿駅). It also offers many attractive spots, including great views of Mt. Fuji, sakura (cherry blossoms; 桜), and more. There are many different events in each season so you can enjoy Shizuoka all year round. Let’s find out more about these attractions!
This time, we are going to introduce the recommended one-day trip from Tokyo jam-packed with Shizuoka attractions. It is good for spring season and includes six different places to visit. Since you can access the destination easily by bus if you follow the visiting order as below, you can view Mt.Fuji as well as exciting, relaxing and delicious experiences all in one day. What unforgettable experiences await you? Let’s check out the details!
1. See the Gorgeous Mt. Fuji from the Longest Suspension Bridge in Japan
Mishima Skywalk (三島スカイウォーク) is the longest suspension bridge in Japan at about 400 meters. When you walk across it, you might feel like you’re walking on air. From this bridge, you can see Mt. Fuji side by side with the deepest bay in Japan (2,500 meters deep) called Suruga Bay (駿河湾). If you visit here in the evening, you can see the orange sunset from the bridge, a breathtaking view. There is also an observatory that you can explore, and several local shops where you can buy souvenirs.
2. Pick Your Own Fresh Strawberries
From January to May every year, you can go strawberry picking in Izu Fruit Park (伊豆フルーツパーク). It offers different types of fruits depending on the season, including melons in summer. You can eat seasonal ice cream, as well as luxurious local cuisine consisting of seafood ingredients from Suruga Bay which contains about 1,000 species of fish.
3. Play with the Cute Animals on the Farm
Do you like animals? Have you ever milked a cow? If you want to pet these cute animals or you are interested in tasting fresh ice cream, butter, and bread, you would have a lot of fun here at Daily Kingdom Oratche (酪農王国オラッチェ). Their fresh milk ice cream tastes rich and delicious. Give it a try!
4. View the Cherry Blossoms around Mt. Fuji
You mustn’t miss the kannami cherry blossoms (かんなみの桜), famous as a great sakura viewing spot. 410 kawazu cherry trees (河津桜) have bloomed along the riverbank every year since 2001. During the end of February to the beginning of March, it’s nice to try one of the walking trails; one is about 2.5 kilometers (about 35 minutes) and the other is about 3.5 kilometers (50 minutes). You can enjoy picture-perfect views of the Hakone Mountains, Mt. Fuji and pink sakura flowers.
5. Enjoy Delicious and Unique Sweets at the Relaxing Nature Park
Chichibunomiya Memorial Park (秩父宮紀念公園) is where you can enjoy different views every season. It was selected as one of the top hundred historic parks in Japan, so it’s well worth a visit. You can enjoy viewing various kinds of flowers, such as weeping cherry trees (枝垂れ桜), which are over 130 years old. There is also a tea ceremony location in the park called “Ugurutei” (うぐいす亭), where you can eat seasonal cakes and Japanese sweets from the menu.
6. Sip Local Beer and See Beautiful Illuminations
While you’re in Shizuoka, why not stay the night? Gotemba Kogen Resort (時之栖) offers not only six different local beers, including seasonal ones, they also have all-you-can-drink and all-you-can-eat sets! Until March 20th, from 17:00 to 21:30, you can also see their brilliant illuminations.
Are you interested in visiting Shizuoka? Although there are several ways to get there, our recommendation is using trains from the main stations of Tokyo.
For example, from Shinjuku Station, you can take the Yamanote Line (山手線) and transfer once at Shinagawa Station (品川駅) where you can take the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen (東海道・山陽新幹線), and arrive at Mishima Station (三島駅), which is the nearest station from Mishima Skywalk, within 1.5 hours.
From Mishima Station, take a bus to Mishima Skywalk. From there, all other destinations are easily accessible by bus. After arriving at Gotemba Kogen Resort, which is the final destination of the route, you can go back to Shinjuku Station directly by using the Odakyu Railway (小田急電鉄) from Gotemba Station (御殿場駅).
The great thing about Shizuoka is that it can offer more exciting attractions, not only the above! If you want to experience outdoor activities, the following two things would be perfect for your Shizuoka journey.
