Matchmaking parties are pretty common in Japan. Though the percentage of couples who actually get married is decreasing nowadays, the government and other private sectors are helping people in holding marriage events and meeting potential partners.
This spring season, another matchmaking party will be held at Lieu de Vintage Mejiro (目白) in Tokyo. This is no ordinary matchmaking event, as participants will be blindfolded while they get to know each other. This will help them find their true match through their inner selves rather than their physical appearance. It is literally a blind date.
Japan is home to one of the fastest aging societies in the world (more elderly, fewer young people to support them) and the birth rate in the country has been decreasing for decades. It is also forecast to lose a third of its population in the next fifty years or so.
To help aid its increase, matchmaking parties are funded to remedy the situation. It is said that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (安部晋三) has allocated billions of yen to fund matchmaking events in order to reverse the nation’s shrinking population. This strategy will help encourage young people to settle down and have a family. In turn, to help boost the nation’s birthrate.
Nowadays, these kinds of events are increasingly becoming common, especially in the area of Tokyo. It can be very difficult for women who are thirty years old and older to find a partner in Japan. In order to fulfill their goals of getting married, they sometimes decide to attend spouse-hunting events and singles’ parties to increase their chances.
Some parties are organized into coffee and cake events complete with soundtracks of live piano music to make everything look and feel romantic. This is a rare opportunity for them to go out and meet different people.
The matchmaking party that will be held in Tokyo this coming March 26, 2017 will be called “Kurayami Kon.” This is being sponsored by an upcoming film in the country entitled “Ankoku Joshi” (暗黒女子), a Japanese film directed by Saiji Yakumo (耶雲哉治). The setting will have the atmosphere of the film and will be funded partly from the ticket’s revenue.
The set-up will be likened to a game, where participants will help solve a mystery. Alongside with this, they will be using their olfactory, hearing and tactile senses instead of using their vision. It is quite an expensive party as every participant will have to pay to attend.
The event is open to single men who are 23-28 years of age and single women who are 20-35 years of age. Only eighty participants will be accepted. They should also be interested in looking for a relationship. Unlike other matchmaking parties, the participants will be blindfolded to make sure they don’t see the other counterparts’ physical appearance.
4,600 yen for women
7,600 yen for men
Two events will take place on the day:
3:30pm to 5:30pm
6:30pm to 8:30pm
So if you’re single and your age lies within the range of accepted applicants, you should definitely grab this opportunity to look for your soulmate. Take note that this party is not centered on the person’s physical appearance as it is believed to diminish over time, but on the person’s inner beauty, which lasts a lifetime. Check the site and find your potential future partner!
