  • Tottori (鳥取), a prefecture in the Chugoku (中国) region of Japan, is blessed with volcanic mountains and white sandy beaches. It abounds in sceneries that it becomes a dream escape for those who want to experience quintessential Japan. It hosts so many tourists every year that it becomes a little crowded during seasonal times. However, if you’re trying to avoid the crowds, you can certainly do so by visiting these three places in the area.

    1. Daisen White Resort (だいせんホワイトリゾート)

    Daisen White Resort is located on the highest mountain of Chugoku region. It is blanketed by fine snow from the ocean during the winter season. As such, it becomes an ideal destination for skiers and snowboarders.

    The resort provides ski and snowboard lessons and equipment rental. It has a children’s facility called “TAKApiyo LAND” which gives kids an access to entertaining things such as sleds and other items for playing snow. These are available at no cost.

    Most of the people from Hiroshima (広島), Kobe (神戸), and Osaka (大阪) come here for winter fun. There are a few car parks available near the resort which costs 1,000 yen to 1,500 yen. The resort is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the daytime.

    2. Sakaiminato Port (境漁港)

    This small fishing port is a popular place for snow crabs in Japan and has been esteemed for centuries for its superb seafood. It also has a long history as a seaport and served as the base of the fishing industry for all of Western Japan during World War II.

    During the summer season, the port brings in a lot of bluefin tunas, which weighs 50 to 60 kilograms each. Some of these are sold on auction sites wherein you can actively join. Some people pay a lot of money for a single heavy fish.

    There are several restaurants close to the port that offer all-you-can-eat seafood. One of the must-try luxurious meals which are highly recommended is the red snow crab which costs around 1,500 yen to 3,000 yen each.

    3. Misasa Onsen (三朝温泉)

    Misasa is one of the world’s richest radium springs. It is believed that staying at Misasa Onsen for three days and three nights will cure any form of disease. Its high radon concentration, which comes from the decay of radium, improves a person’s metabolism and immunity. This is better known as the “hormesis effect.” Once you inhale radon, it also increases the function of antioxidants in your body. Antioxidants function to remove active oxygen which is said to cause aging and other lifestyle-related diseases.

    There are many people who come to Misasa Onsen with the aim of curing and recuperating their bodies. Bathing in this hot spring is as refreshing as bathing in the forest. It is said that the mineral-rich water is also great for drinking.

    Misasa’s main street is lined with souvenir shops, restaurants, and shooting galleries which make it a typical old-fashioned town.
