Have you heard about Ginza Six? It is a new shopping complex which will be opened soon and you really do not want to miss it! The mall will feature art installations by Yayoi Kusama (草間彌生), who is known for her eccentric art style based on her fascination with dots. One of her most recognizable works includes a dotted pumpkin, and now her pumpkin artwork will be featured in Ginza Six!
Ginza Six is a new retail and commercial complex. It is set to be the biggest retail complex in Ginza with thirteen floors above ground and six floors below ground. This is great news for those who enjoy shopping in Japan!
Ginza Six offers 47,000 square meters of not only retail but also other facilities such as offices, a Noh theater in the basement, and a rooftop backyard. Therefore, visitors can easily spend a lot of time hanging around in the mall for purposes other than shopping.
The mall will be opened in April 2017 and it aims to attract twenty million visitors a year. There are at least 241 stores of confirmed tenants including luxurious brands such as Fendi and Van Cleef & Arpels. Yoshio Taniguchi (谷口吉生) is the one who designs the exterior of the building with the help of Kajima Corporation (鹿島建設株式会社). On the other hand, Gwenael Nicolas designs the interior of the building by drawing inspiration from the narrow alleyways of Ginza (銀座) and Kyoto (京都).
There is an exhibition space in the middle of the mall which is meant to showcase contemporary art. Mori Art Museum’s (森美術館) Fumio Nanjo (南條史夫) oversees the contemporary art that will be displayed, and the very first opening exhibition on 20 April 2017 will feature the works of Yayoi Kusama.
The name Yayoi Kusama is not unheard of when it comes to contemporary artists in Japan. Her works have impressed fans worldwide and she is known to be one of the most popular artists in the world. Her art installations like Infinity Mirrors and Infinity Rooms, which give a visitors a sense of space, have been showcased in other countries and garnered many visitors. For instance, the art installation called “Infinite Obsession” was set up in 2014 and attracted about two million visitors in South and Central America.
Her art pieces that will be featured in Ginza Six are twelve red and white dotted pumpkins which will be hung from the mall’s ceiling. The pumpkins are of various sizes. Aside from that, there is a ‘Yayoi Kusama Pop Up Store: My Eternal Soul’ (わが永遠の魂) that sells various merchandise featuring the artist’s designs. The pop up store will be open until 16 May 2017.
Besides the work of Yayoi Kusama, there are also other art installations such as this twelve-meter “living wall” by teamLab which is a digital technology media group. The “living wall” showcases the image of a waterfall as the sun sets. In addition, there are installations by other contemporary artists such as Shinji Ohmaki (大巻伸嗣), Misa Funai (船井美佐), and Yuumi Domoto (堂本右美). Lounge Six will also be showcasing the work by Hiroshi Sugimoto (杉本博司) who is a New York-based artist.
With such interesting art installations, you can be certain that the opening of Ginza Six will attract many visitors. Its mega shopping experience itself will drive many shopaholics crazy. Be sure to check it out when it opens.
