It is quite easy to find collector’s items and merchandise when it comes to animated movies or manga (マンガ; comic books) in Japan. However, looking for specific goodies centered on animated classics such as Studio Ghibli isn’t always so easy. This is why Donguri Republic specializes their items on the animations featured in Studio Ghibli.
Some of the items you can find are recreations of Jiji (ジジ) the black cat, such as magnets for refrigerator doors of even flower pots. There are also fish girl Ponyo (ポニョ) versions of these. You may pick up a levistone pendant from Laputa Castle in the Sky (天空の城ラピュタ), follow Kiki’s (キキ) hairstyle by using a fetching hair bow or grab several plush toys for your kids.
The store has many branches but if you are located in Tokyo (東京), you can head to the branch in Ikebukuro (池袋) which is the nearest store. It is open daily and is definitely the perfect place to grab last-minute souvenirs.

The first tea collection is a fragrant rooibos tea filled with strawberry, apricot and honey flavors. It is blended with pink peppers, rose petals and dried blueberries, creating a warm and friendly taste. This is presented in a tin featuring pictures of characters from Kiki’s Delivery Service (魔女の宅急便) and is called the Jiji and Butterfly (ジジとちょうちょ) tin.
Another type of tea is enclosed in a Kiki and Townscape (キキと街並み) tin, which features black tea filled with the sweet flavors of strawberry and blackcurrants. This combination gives a bittersweet taste which resembles best to Kiki’s struggle to become a full-fledged witch.
The third tea is a unique hojicha (ほうじ茶) or roasted green tea. This is said to be sourced from the Sayama Hills (狭山) of Saitama Prefecture (埼玉県). Compared to usual green tea, this contains less caffeine. As such, it can be a perfect option for people who want to relax before sleeping at night. You can find the tea in a Napping Totoro (お昼寝トトロ) tin, which looks adorable. Each of the mentioned teas are going to be sold in a 40-gram mass at a cost of 1,500 yen.
The tea collection will be retailed across the country’s Donguri Republic stores from April 22, 2017. This will come in a limited number only. To make sure that you won’t miss any of them, you may purchase them on Donguri’s online store (Japanese only). However, they only deliver within Japan.
For those living abroad, there’s a chance that they will appear on the Japan Trend Shop (ジャパン・トレンド・ショップ) and Rakuten Global Market (楽天グローバルマーケット). If you’re in Japan, check out the complete list of Donguri stores across the country in case you need help locating them.
So if you’re a Studio Ghibli nut, why not take advantage of this event and purchase some exciting merchandise with your favorite characters on them? Be sure to keep an eye out for them come April 22, 2017!
