If you have been to Shibuya (渋谷) these past few years, you might have noticed that there are construction efforts taking place at the area around Shibuya Station (渋谷駅). This is because that area is undergoing a large-scale redevelopment as part of the Shibuya renewal plan. One of the transformations of Shibuya includes the opening of Shibuya Cast (渋谷キャスト) shopping mall on 28th April 2017.
While Shibuya has a reputation for being a place for young people, the renewal plan of Shibuya included the opening of the 34-floor Hikarie building in 2012. The building is catered towards an older target audience with a more refined taste in brands. It houses upscale restaurants, boutiques, and an arts complex.
There are plans for more complexes to be opened. These include the upcoming Shibuya Cast complex that has 18 floors filled with shops, cafes, restaurants, and others. While Shibuya Hikarie features more upscale shops, Shibuya Cast will feature more affordable options. The Shibuya area will also have offices and apartments, such as those which are catered towards short-term tenants.
The Shibuya Cast complex will be situated precisely in between Harajuku (原宿) and Shibuya. The location of the building is at the very end of Cat Street (キャットストリート). Besides the shops, apartments, and offices, there will also be a square for events such as flea markets. This square is located on the side of the building which faces Meiji-dori (明治通り).
In addition, Shibuya Cast is centered on the concept of creative employees. Therefore, some of the shared office spaces and co-housing form a large creative complex for the purpose of encouraging new ideas and technology. As Shibuya Cast complex will be opening soon in April, there will be a 10-day event from 28th April to 7th May 2017 to celebrate it. The events will be featuring art music and food and it is expected to attract a huge crowd.
Among the investors of Shibuya Cast is the railway company Tokyu Group (東急グループ). Besides being an investor, there will also be a store opened by Tokyu Group. Tokyu Group plays an integral role in the renewal plan of Shibuya.

In autumn 2018, you can expect to see another skyscraper to be built. The building is called Shibuya Stream (渋谷ストリーム) and will have 35 floors. It will be housing offices and a hotel. The building is located at the south of Shibuya station near Toyoko line (東横線) entrance.
There are other projects on the east side of Shibuya Station that are expected to be completed by the year 2020. Some of these projects are Shibuya Station’s East Building (渋谷駅東棟), the area around Dogenzaka-Itchome (道玄坂一丁目), and Nanpeidai Project (南平台プロジェクト). Moreover, Hachiko Square (ハチ公広場) will also be upgraded. Therefore, the redevelopment plan in Shibuya is expected to be completed by 2027.
Besides Shibuya, there are also many other areas that are undergoing development as part of the preparation for 2020 Olympics. Examples include Ginza (銀座), Toyosu (豊洲), Shinjuku (新宿), Shimokitazawa (下北沢), and Marunouchi (丸の内). Therefore, you can expect many major areas in Japan to get a new look which will make your future trip to Japan more exciting!
