  • It’s been 12 years since Nobuta wo Produce (野ブタ。をプロデュース) aired. It is a drama that centers around shy high school student, Nobuko Kotani (小谷信子), with her friends Shuji Kiritani (桐谷修二) and Akira Kusano (草野彰) who work together in their attempts to make Kotani more appealing and popular. The drama stars Horikita Maki (堀北真希), Kamenashi Kazuya (亀梨和也), and Yamashita Tomohisa (山下智久).

This 2017, Horikita Maki officially released her statement that she is retiring from the entertainment business to focus on her family and personal life. Meanwhile, the two popular actors from Johnny & Associates (ジャニーズ事務所) reunite for a new romantic TV series and to form a special unit for the drama’s theme song.

    Kamenashi Kazuya

Kamenashi Kazuya was born on February 23, 1986 and has been under Johnny & Associates since he was 12 years old. He is a co-lead vocalist of KAT-TUN (カトゥーン), a popular J-pop band. He also has a successful acting career as he starred in the wine-themed manga-based Drops of God (神の雫), the school drama Gokusen (ごくせん), the popular shoujo manga-based Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge (ヤマトナデシコ七変化), the horror-adventure Yokai Ningen Bem (妖怪人間ベム), and most recently, the novel-based drama Kaito Yamaneko (怪盗 山猫).

    Yamashita Tomohisa

Yamashita Tomohisa was born on April 9, 1985 and is fondly called as “Yamapi (山P).” He received a degree in Commerce from Meiji University (明治大学), one of Japan’s leading universities. He debuted as a singer in the group called NEWS (ニュース), and later ventured on a solo career with his successful single, “Daite Senorita (抱いてセニョリータ).”

Yamapi also has a string of successful TV series. This includes Proposal Daisakusen (プロポーズ大作戦), Code Blue (コード・ブルー), Flower for Algernon (アルジャーノンに花束を), and 5-ji Kara 9-ji Made (5時から9時まで). He also starred in movies Ashita no Joe (あしたのジョー) and Kinkyori Renai (近キョリ恋愛).

From “Shuji and Akira (修二と彰)” to “Kame and Yamapi (亀と山P)”

In 2005, Kame (亀) and Yamapi formed the unit “Shuji and Akira” based on their characters from the drama, Nobuta wo Produce. The song, “Seishun Amigo (青春アミーゴ),” that served as the drama’s theme song sold more than 500,000 copies and debuted at no. 1 on the Oricon charts.

This 2017, they are back as “Kame and Yamapi” and will provide the theme song for their currently airing Japanese drama, Boku, Unmei no Hito desu (ボク、運命の人です。). The single is called “Senaka Goshi no Chance (背中越しのチャンス – Japanese only)” and will be officially released on May 17, 2017.

    Boku, Unmei no Hito desu

The title, “Boku, Unmei no Hito desu,” translates to “I’m Your Destiny,” and true enough, this romantic drama focuses on the power of destiny in the lives of two people whom God chose to be together.

The drama stars Kamenashi Kazuya as Masaki Makoto (正木誠) and Kimura Fumino (木村文乃) as Kogetsu Haruko (湖月晴子). They are of the same age and work in separate offices located in the same building. They both have some painful memories regarding their past romantic relationships, which make them cynical when it comes to meeting a new one. This changes when a mysterious man claiming to be “God (神様)” suddenly appears in Masaki’s apartment. He reveals that the woman who is sitting on the desk right on the other side of the wall in Masaki’s new workplace is the one whom he is destined to marry. He urges Masaki to quickly approach her since the fate of the world depends on their relationship. Masaki is unconvinced until the man suddenly disappears right before his eyes.

Later on, “God” returns with proof that Masaki has encountered Haruko several times in the past. Masaki tries to meet Haruko but he outright tells her that she is his destined partner. The woman is baffled at the stranger’s very direct approach and so she tries to avoid him. Will Masaki be able to win Haruko’s heart and save the future of the world?

I saw the first episode of the drama and while it has the same old generic shoujo romcom formula, I enjoyed it as it brings back all kinds of Nobuta-induced nostalgia. Kame and Yamapi both aged like fine wine and their acting skills have also improved over time. Boku, Unmei no Hito desu airs every Saturday at 10 PM on Nippon TV.

Have you seen this new drama? What do you think of Kame and Yamapi’s reunion?
