Your Lie in April, also known as Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (四月は君の嘘), is a manga series by Naoshi Arakawa which was published in Kodansha’s Monthly Shonen Magazine from April 2011 to May 2015. It was awarded Best Shonen Manga in the 37th Annual Kodansha Manga Awards and was also nominated in the 5th Manga Taisho Awards.
Your Lie in April was adapted into an animated series by A1-Pictures with 22 episodes which aired from October 2014 to March 2015. A live-action adaptation was also screened in cinemas in September 2016. From the pages of the 11-volume manga, the series once again becomes alive and goes to the theaters in a stage play adaptation from August to September 2017.
The play tells the story of a young piano prodigy who disappears from the stage after being unable to play in the middle of a competition. Two years later, Kōsei Arima encounters the unexpected, under the full bloom of cherry blossoms in spring. His black and white, monotonous world without music returns to full color when he meets the capricious violinist Kaori Miyazono.
The main cast for this stage adaptation includes Shintarō Anzai as Kōsei Arima and Arisa Matsunaga as Kaori Miyazono. Kōsei’s childhood friends Tsubaki Sawabe and Ryōta Watari will be played by Misato Kawauchi and Masanari Wada, respectively. Kōsei also shared the spotlight in his young competitive music career with Emi Igawa, played by Haruka Yamashita and Takeshi Aiza, played by Shōjirō Yokoi.
Part of what makes this stage play adaptation so special is the live music performance. Pianist Yuta Matsumura and violinist Shuko Kobayashi perform the music that is so central to Your Lie in April. Their duet performance of Camille Saint-Saëns’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, Op. 28 and Frédéric Chopin’s Ballade No. 1 in G minor, Op. 23 are definitely something to look forward to, as are their solo performances of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 9 “Kreutzer” first movement and select movements of Chopin’s Etudes.
This stage play is directed by Naohiro Ise, with the script written by Kaori Miura.
Your Lie in April will be performed in Osaka at the Umeda Arts Theater from September 7 to 10 2017. If you are in Tokyo, you can see it earlier, from August 24 to September 3 2017 at the AiiA 2.5 Theater Tokyo. After the stage play, there will also be a mini concert on select performance dates. Tickets for premium seats are 9,800 yen each and regular seats are 6,800 yen. Attendees will also get a paper guide with the stage play illustrations.
Exclusive merchandise including the stage play’s brochure, bromide sets and badges will be sold throughout the duration of the performances. They also have pocket tissues and handkerchiefs for the moments of the play that will make you cry! The acrylic key chain featuring Kōsei and Kaori in the stage play’s original artwork is also a good memento to take home.
