In Japan, it is not unusual for stories to transcend forms. What was originally a manga series is usually adapted into an animation series, and eventually, it makes it to either the big screen or the stage. This November 2017, Natsume Ono’s ACCA 13 makes it to the stage! Here’s what you need to know about this latest adaptation.

ACCA 13, or ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept., is a manga series by Natsume Ono. Other works of the manga creator include Ristorante Paradiso and House of Five Leaves.
ACCA 13 is a seinen manga that was serialized in SQUARE ENIX’s Monthly Big Gangan from 2013 to 2016. It was later published in a tankobon (independent) format consisting of six volumes and was recently licensed by Yen Press for distribution in North America. ACCA 13 was also adapted into a Japanese animation series by MADHOUSE with 12 episodes that aired from January to March 2017.
The Kingdom of Dowa, which is divided into 13 districts, is overseen by an organization called “ACCA.” Jean Otus is the Deputy Chief of ACCA’s Inspection Department. During his inspections, Jean is often seen smoking a cigar, earning himself the nickname, “Jean the Cigarette Peddler.” As the story unfolds, Jean is caught in the middle of a conspiracy that could shift the peace that ACCA maintains.
Japanese actor and singer Hirofumi Araki stars this stage play as Jean Otus. He is popular for his role as Sadaharu Inui in the musical and live-action film of The Prince of Tennis.
Dancer and actor Haruki Kiyama plays Nino. Haruki is an experienced and versatile performer who has been cast in big productions such as Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Michael Jackson Tribute Show Man in the Mirror, and the musical, Cabaret. He also recently played in the musical adaptation of the animated series, Star-Myu, as Itsuki Otori.
ACCA is led by five chief officers who will be played by the following: Kazuhiro Hirakawa as Spade, Washio Noboru as Pastis, Meiken Ito as Pine, Shogo Suzuki as Grossular, and Nezumi Imamura as Lillium. Additional cast for the other officers of ACCA are Makoto Renjo as Director-General Mauve, Naru Kawamoto as Inspection Department Chief Owl, Tatsuya Isaka as Suitsu District Supervisor Warbler, Kyohei Tobino as Suitsu District Officer Biscuit, and Ryutaro Maeda as Rockstella. The Dowa Kingdom cast also includes Shogo Yamazaki as Prince Schwan and Naoya Kitagawa as Prince Schwan’s bodyguard.
Koichi Ishii serves as the play’s director and scriptwriter. The stage play is produced by Nelke Planning which was also responsible for producing The Prince of Tennis Musicals and Rock Musical Bleach.
