Another year has just begun, which means another opportunity for businesses to open in Japan. One of which is the Pokémon Cafe that is slated to open in the district of Nihonbashi in Central Tokyo on March 14, 2018. Most Pokémon cafes in the past were just pop-up stores, but this time, this cafe is going to be a permanent one. Find out more about it!
The plan for opening a Pokémon Cafe is related to the success of the mobile game called “Pokémon GO,” which was released in 2016. For those who are unfamiliar with the game, it is a free-to-play, location-based augmented reality game made as a collaboration between Niantic and Nintendo. It allows players to customize their own avatars and play with them in real-world settings.
In Pokémon GO, instead of battling Pokémons to capture them, players flick and throw Poké Balls at them. The game took the world by storm as players seemed to like the idea of interacting with different Pokémon characters and other players.

Since the popularity of Pokémon shows no signs of slowing down, it is about time that a permanent cafe opened in Tokyo. Prior to this, there were several Pokémon pop-up shops that took the center stage in Japan. One of these was the limited cafe near Tokyo Skytree which celebrated the 40th anniversary of CoroCoro Comic. It served a variety of food such as Pikachu in a Pumpkin Pasta and a Poké Ball Burger dish. Another Pokémon pop-up cafe was opened on the 7th floor of Shibuya PARCO, which also served Pikachu-themed meals and other limited-edition goodies. These pop-up cafes always draw long queues due to the fact that they are only available for a limited time. It’s indeed good news that a permanent Pokémon Cafe by The Pokémon Company is scheduled to open soon.
The cafe will be opening alongside a new Pokémon Center on the 5th floor of the east building of Nihonbashi Takashimaya (an upscale department store). This is going to be the 12th Pokémon Center store in Japan that sells Pokémon specialty merchandise.
The Pokémon Cafe will serve every imaginable Pokémon dish, drink, and goodies that will certainly draw a huge number of followers. There’s no clear report yet on what type of dishes the cafe will serve, but who knows? You might see your favorite character on the menu!
If you’re an avid Pokémon fan, then this soon-to-open Pokémon Cafe might just be the reason why you need to visit Japan. Everyone can now enjoy Pokémon-themed dishes and drinks all throughout the year! Whether or not this means no more long queues, it is surely worth saving for a trip.
