Have you ever heard about Nihon Sankei (日本三景) ? Well known as the Three Most Scenic Views in Japan. Japanese believe that these three beautiful places have breathtaking view that stands above the others. So if you travel to Japan, make sure to visit all or at least one of them. The three amazing places are Pine clad Islands of Matsushima, Sandbar of Amanohashidate in Kyoto prefecture and Torii of Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima Prefecture. And in this article, I will write about the beauty of Matsushima.
Located just 30 minutes by train from Sendai station in Miyagi prefecture, Matshushima is one of the easy-to-access touristic spots in prefecture. After getting off at Matsushima Kaigan Station you will be welcomed by the beautiful sea of Matsushima.
Matsushima consists of 260 scattered islets and many of them are covered with pines (Matsu) trees which is why the island called Matsushima (The island of Pine Clad). It’s highly recommended to enjoy the four views of Matsushima Bay (known as “Matsushima Shidaikan”) Ogi-dani, Tomi-yama, Otaka-mori, and Tamon-zan, which are all totally amazing. From each point of view, Matsushima will always be breathtaking and you can see its beauty from every angle.
Besides the amazing natural beauty of this island that was famous ever since the Heian period, there is another interesting fact about it. In 2011, Japan, specifically Tohoku region, experienced Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE) followed by the most disastrous Tsunami in Japan’s modern history. Fortunately, this Matsushima area escaped the major damage due to its scattered islets that broke down the Tsunami wave.
