Also known as My Little Monster, Tonari no Kaibutsukun is a manga series by Robico. It ran in Kodansha’s “Dessert” magazine from 2008 to 2013. The manga was also published in tankobon format with 12 volumes, including an extra special volume for a total of 13, which was released from 2009 to 2014. The series has sold 5 million copies and is a huge hit as a shojo manga.
Tonari no Kaibutsukun was adapted into an animated series by Brain’s Base, which aired from October to December 2012 on TV Tokyo, as well as on other networks later on. The anime series had a total of 13 episodes with an original animation DVD episode that came out in 2013.

Award-winning Japanese actress Tao Tsuchiya stars in the movie as Mizutani Shizuku. She made her debut in 2008 in the widely acclaimed film, Tokyo Sonata, directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa. She has been cast in numerous lead roles since then, including the role of Misao Makimachi in Rurouni Kenshin, Naho Takamiya in Orange, and Tsubasa Ono in Aozora Yell, which similar to Tonari no Kaibutsukun were all adapted from manga series of the same titles.
Tao Tsuchiya received the Newcomer of the Year Award at the 39th Japan Academy Prize and at the 40th Elan d’or Awards. She is also appearing in two other films to play the lead roles in Kasane and Haru Matsu Bokura, which have both been listed for release this 2018.
Multi-awarded Japanese actor Masaki Suda joins Tao Tsuchiya in the lead cast as Yoshida Haru. He debuted as an actor in the series Kamen Rider W in 2009. Aside from television series, he has also taken lead roles in various films such as Daily Lives of High School Boys as Tadakuni, Setoutsumi as Seto, and Somebody as Kotaro Kamiya.
Masaki Suda received the Newcomer of the Year Award at the 37th Japan Academy Prize and at the 40th Elan d’or Awards. He has also been nominated and awarded Best Supporting Actor and Best Actor in the past years. Among his most recent awards are Best Actor at the 26th Japanese Professional Movie Awards, and Best Supporting Actor at the 26th Tokyo Sports Film Award and at the 38th Yokohama Film Festival.
Joining the cast are Yuki Furukawa as Haru’s brother Yuzan, Yuki Yamada as Kenji Yamaguchi, Elaiza Ikeda as Asako Natsume, Minami Hamabe as Chizuru Oshima, Gaku Sano as Sohei Sasahara, and Mokomichi Hayami as Mitsuyoshi Misawa. The film is directed by Sho Tsukikawa who also directed the live-action adaptations of the shojo manga Kurosaki-kun no Iinari ni Nante Naranai in 2016 and the novel Kimi no Suizo wo Tabetai in 2017.
