Koi wa Ameagari no You Ni, also known as Koi Ame, is a manga series by Jun Mayuzuki. It was first serialized in Shogakukan’s Monthly Big Comic Spirits in 2014 and was later moved to the Weekly Big Comic Spirits in 2016 until 2018. Shogakukan published the manga in tankobon format, which had a total of 10 volumes, from 2015 to 2018.
The manga received a nomination for the Manga Taisho Awards of 2016 and was also featured in the “Kono Manga ga Sugoi!” guidebook that was released in the same year.
The series made its anime debut in January 2018. It was animated by WIT STUDIO and aired on Fuji TV with a total of 12 episodes.
Akira Tachibana, a 17-year-old high school student, was on the school track team until she sustained an injury that made her quit running. With her emotions welling in her heart, under the pouring rain, she met 45-year-old Masami Kondo who is a manager of a family restaurant. Akira decides to work part-time at the family restaurant and slowly discovers her growing feelings towards Masami.

Japanese actress and model Nana Komatsu (小松菜奈) stars the film as Akira Tachibana. She recently played Ritsuko Mukae in the live-action film adaptation of the manga Kids on the Slope, which screened in Japan in March 2018. She similarly starred in the 2015 film of the manga Bakuman as Miho Azuki and in the 2016 film of the manga Oboreru Knife as Natsume Mochizuki.
Co-starring the film is Yo Oizumi (大泉洋) as manager Masami Kondo. He played villainous roles in recent film adaptations such as alchemist Shou Tucker in the 2017 movie adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist and ghoul investigator Kureo Mado in the 2017 movie adaptation of Tokyo Ghoul.
Yo Oizumi gained popularity through the variety show How do you like Wednesday? which ran from 1996 to 2002. He has also appeared in various TV dramas and voiced characters in anime films such as Tatara in The Boy and the Beast, Pepe in Nasu: Summer in Andalusia, and Professor Layton in Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva.
Joining the cast are Shono Hayama as Akira’s classmate Takashi Yoshizawa and Nana Seino as Akira’s friend and track team captain Haruka Kiyan. Hayato Isomura, Honoka Matsumoto, and Mari Hamada play Akira’s fellow part-time workers Ryosuke Kase, Yui Nishida, and Kayoko Kubo, respectively. Shigeyuki Totsugi takes the role of manager Masami’s friend Chihiro Kujo, Yo Yoshida plays Akira’s mother, and Maika Yamamoto is track star Mizuki Kurata.
Akira Nagai is directing the film with the script penned by Riko Sakaguchi.
A unique feature of this film is having a voice guide for the visually impaired using the UDCast application which can be downloaded on smartphones. This service will be available starting June 8, 2018. Koi Ame will also be screened with Japanese subtitles for a limited time in selected cinemas.
Koi Ame‘s theme song is “Front Memory” performed by gospel singer Emiko Suzuki with Japanese music producer Seiji Kameda (亀田誠治). The song was originally performed by Japanese rock band Shinsei Kamattechan in 2014.
