Convenience stores, locally called “Konbini” (コンビニ), are one of the favourite aspects of people living and staying in Japan. They are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They sell everything you need from food and drink to makeup, household supplies, alcohol, cigarettes, and handy items such as umbrellas. On top of that, you can find it everywhere, not to mention that in larger cities you are never more than a kilometer from at least one.
One of the biggest convenience store chains in Japan, Family Mart is king when it comes to delicious food and drinks. Their summer range of ice drinks and unique sweets make them a favourite for those looking to satisfy their hunger pangs. With the sizable collection of snacks and treats on offer, which ones are worth buying? Here is a list of my top five favourite Family Mart snacks!
The Ore-no (a masculine way of saying “mine”) chain store offers jumbo sizes for all kinds of snacks, including cakes, yogurt, and ramen. Its packaging has a picture of a man in a business suit and the large size is meant to appeal to men (or the ones that are really hungry). It’s quite fun to look for their assortment of products and try out some of the massive versions of the regular snacks.
As you might be able to guess, this snack is great if you are craving something really chocolaty. It is surprisingly moist and rich for what you might expect from a convenience store. The Atsugiri Chocolate Cake goes well with a cold glass of milk; it might be small, but I guarantee is very satisfying.
I’m not usually a fan of donuts, but these are so yummy! They are crumbly, sweet, and go perfectly with a cup of tea or coffee. They are definitely some of the best snacks you can buy only at Family Mart. They’re very moreish, so be careful in case you have the entire bag beside you because it’ll be devoured in no time. It`s the best treat for you and your friends and works perfect for a party, for visiting a friend`s house or simply, as a gift for someone.
These scrumptious eclairs are just heavenly! If you are looking for chocolate and cream, these eclairs are a must try! With just the right size, no over-the-top sweetness, they make it a satisfying desert. The cream is tasty and there is a generous helping of it! Eclairs are a classic snack and Family Mart delivers them perfectly.
Strawberries in Japan are sweet, refreshing and strawberry-related snacks are all the rage. This konbini tart, despite just being a couple of hundred yen is classy looking, sweet, and delicious. The tangy taste of the strawberries goes really well with the crumbly base.
Those are my favourite five snacks and treats you can buy at Family Mart! You don’t have to go to a high-class bakery or cake shop to enjoy some truly high quality and yummy sweets. Next time you visit Family Mart, be sure to check out some of these snacks.
