The Exciting Anime-Themed Trains in Japan

  • Talking about trains, Japan is a country where train is the main for of public transportation besides bus. The government and companies who run this business do their best to make passengers feel pleasant in it and continue using the line, that is why Japanese trains are clean, comfortable and have good security. A lot of effort is put in to conceive these conditions, one of them is decorating the train with various anime characters. There are some nice trains with cute and even several popular anime characters, like Naruto.

    1. Hokago Tea Time (K-ON!)

    A train type 700 decorated with Hokago Tea Time characters (Yui Hirasawa, Mio Akiyama, Ritsu Tainaka, Tsumugi Kotobuki and Azusa Nakano) appears on Keihan Otsu line. The train used to operate during 2011 which connected Kyoto with Shiga prefecture.

    Inside the train, you may find K-ON! albums stick to the ceiling.

    2. Naruto

    An event to celebrate 1,300th anniversary of Mimasaka was held in Mimasaka region, Okayama Prefecture. The event based on anime and manga series Naruto featured trains decorated with Naruto themed artwork. The Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto, who was born in the town of Nagi in Okayama Prefecture assisted this event. These trains operated on Tsuyama, Kishin, and Inbi lines in Okayama Prefecture.

    3. Girls und Panzer

    This train runs on Kaishima Rinkai railway, Ibaraki Prefecture.
    The anime used real-world location, the city of Oarai, Japan. Because of this, many events featuring Girls und Panzer were held in the city. Kashima Rinkai Railway, the company that operates the local train line has decorated two train cars with the characters.

    This train used to run between Oarai and Mito stations.


    Oreimo used real-world location too, set around the city of Chiba. Chiba Urban Monorail operated ‘Oreimo monorail’ train along with the 2nd season of the anime, the monorail ran though Chiba City. Unfortunately, the service has ended on the 31th of March, 2014.

    5. Chu-nibyo

    The first pink car represents real world and the blue car represents the chunibyo/fantasy world. The train is operated by Keihan Electric Railway, Ishiyama-Sakamoto Line, Biwa Prefecture

    6. One Piece

    JR Yamanote line train had selected cars decorated with One Piece characters. The train was operating from the 1st of August to the 15th of August, 2014. This event was held for the 15th anniversary of One Piece anime adaptation. A lot of people were surprised when they saw their favourite anime on the Tokyo’s major line.
