  • Tokyo is such a fashion-forward city. It leads the world in top-notch street fashion and in completely out of the box, lavish outfits. While I was packing to move here I was trying to pick out the best pieces from my closet and kept looking at Tokyo fashion accounts for inspiration on possible outfits to wear while I’m here. I’ve also been extremely tempted to shop until I’m out of money here because there are so many street fashion stores and I’ve completely fallen in love with Tokyo street style.

A little while ago my brother asked me if there are people dressed up as anime characters walking through the streets every day. While there aren’t people dressed up as anime character, the Japanese know how to bring a new level of fantasy to the streets in the way they dress.

At first, I thought I would see I would see people dressed as fashion icons every day, but I found that isn’t the case all over Tokyo. The Japanese are a very homogeneous society, most everyone is dressed similarly for school or work during the day.

I wanted to find where most of the fashion-forward people were in Tokyo. So, I did a quick search on Instagram and found just the place to go. Harajuku and Shibuya are the epicenters for street fashion and dramatic dressing. One is walking distance from the other, so I made a whole day out of exploring these two cities for fashion.

I think a lot of the people here are less concerned about what others will think about their outfits and are only concerned with wearing what they like and what expresses their personality.

It is really refreshing to me to see all these people wearing such expressive outfits and showing off their personalities through their clothes. It has inspired me to be a bit more expressive in the way I dress and to wear what makes me feel good, rather than worrying about what other people will think of my outfit.

While I want to ball out and just buy a whole new wardrobe here, that isn’t very realistic. So, I’ve been looking through the shops and thrift stores in Harajuku and Shibuya to find a few new pieces that really speak to me and my personality. As for the rest of my clothes, I’ve been looking at them in a new light and trying to pair my clothes in different ways than I have before. Experimenting with style is always fun and to be at the heart of personalized fashion has me truly inspired.
