  • Followed by Go To Travel Campaign, the Japanese government’s second policy is that of the “Go To Campaign” package, Go To Eat Campaign has started to boost the economy that has been suffering due to COVID-19.

    Overview of the Campaign

    The Go To Eat Campaign is for those who live in Japan and are planning to eat at restaurants or use their take-out services. Catering businesses which only runs take-out or delivery service like Domino’s Pizza or Uber Eats are not applicable for this campaign.

    The campaign has two components: point-based rewards (JPY500 for lunch and JPY1,000 for dinner) and 25% discount vouchers (premium meal tickets).

    Point-Based Rewards

    If you reserve your lunch or dinner from the booking sites as mentioned below, you will get JPY500 x person for lunch, and JPY1,000 x person for dinner. For example, if you book your table for 4 for lunch, you will get JPY2,000 points (JPY500 x 4 person) after your lunch and you can use your points next time to go out. The point will be given until the end of January 2021 and it’s valid until the end of March 2021.

    This point rewards campaign is available in all prefectures. The registered restaurants are told to work on infection prevention measures, and most prepare antiseptic solutions and hand sanitizers at the entrance and set the tables a few meters apart.
    However, not all restaurants joined the campaign. So if you book a restaurant, make sure you check that restaurant states that the Go To Eat Campaign is applicable (Go To Eat キャンペーン対象店). Additionally, book restaurants using the links on the list above, which will help you search for restaurants that are participating in the campaign.

    Discount Vouchers (Premium Meal Tickets)

    Followed by Kyoto and Osaka, Go To Eat Tokyo’s premium meal tickets will be finally on sale on November 20, 2020. The discount vouchers will be sold as 1) paper coupons and 2) digital coupons. The former will cost JPY10,000, which include JPY1,000 tickets x10 and JPY500 tickets x5 with a total value of JPY12,500. The latter will cost JPY8,000, and include JPY1,000 tickets x10 for a total value of JPY10,000. With the discount vouchers, you will get 25% at the selected restaurants.

    In Tokyo, they plan to sell 3 million sets of paper coupons and 1.25 million sets of digital coupons totally 50 billion yen.

    In order to get the paper coupon, you need to exchange the ticket that can be purchased online. It’s a on first-come first-served basis, and you will need to bring your ticket at one of the designated places and exchange it for a paper coupon. These ticket will be sold from November 19, 2020 to January 31.

    To exchange those tickets and get your paper coupons, you’ll have to visit one of the following places: Seijo Ishii, Tokyu hotels,KY Liquor, View Plaza (at JR stations),JTB, Marui department stores, Sotetsu hotels, Hotel New Otani Tokyo,Hotel Seaside Edogawa, Bic Camera, Toyoko Inn, Kakuyasu, JR East hotels, and Granduo.

    The digital coupon can be purchased at Yahoo’s PassMarket . It’s a lottery and if you win, a confirmation email will be sent to you so you can purchase the digital coupon from November 27, 2020 to December 4, 2020. The first application period for the lottery is from November 20, 2020 to November 24, 2020. The information for the second and the following lotteries will be announced sequentially. The digital coupon is valid from November 27, 2020 to March 31, 2021.

    The sales period of Go To Eat Tokyo Premium Meal tickets is from November 20, 2020 to January 31, 2021, and the usage period is from November 20, 2020 to March 31, 2021. However, premium tickets in Kyoto and Osaka sold out within a few hours, so Tokyo might follow suit.

    Each prefecture, from Hokkaido to Okinawa, offer their own vouchers. So, if you want to go to the restaurants in Tokyo and Yokohama, then you need to buy Tokyo’s and Kanagawa’s tickets separately.
