Like many other things in Japan, ‘furoshiki’(風呂敷) has survived many centuries. Literally translated meaning ‘bath cloth’, it almost went forgotten after WW2.
Since the convenient bag/wrapping/decoration cloth got mostly replaced by plastic bags, it only experienced a revival in the new millennium with Japanese artists modernising it and trying to get back to old roots.
Japanese designer Masaya Hashimoto had this brilliant idea to apply the furoshiki technique to shoes, that will fit every foot.
Introducing themselves as “Hello, We are FUROSHIKI Shoes.”, the company behind the concept explains their shoes as follows:
“The first multi-size “wrap-around sole” that adapts perfectly to the foot. Special ergonomic bands adhere to the ankle, ensuring maximum wearability, freedom of movement, and comfort.”
Taking a closer look, this looks extremely comfortable! The bands, that wrap around the ankle and give the shoes their name, have a nostalgic appearance, reminding of the wonderful furoshiki cloth. Not only the advantages of a healthy footwear, these shoes look just plain awesome.
Hashimoto states, that the idea for the shoes came out of convenience : “President Marco Bramani proposed to us some themes, one of them was “Mono size” to find out the way to reduce & integrate the variety of shoe/sole size production.” The concept of wrapping something also comes from the Japanese way of taking good care and cherishing things. Why not take good care of out feet, which have the burden of our whole body, every day?
Available in five different designs: jeans, aqua, black, pearls, and violet, the shoes are all unisex and sold in various sizes, though due to their popularity, most sizes are currently out of stock in the web store. However, you can also check out the brand’s other shoes that promise all a stylish comfort for feet.
