“5 Centimeters per Second” was awarded “The Best Animated Feature Film” in 2007 at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. It is a Japanese romantic drama film directed by Makoto Shinkai, a Japanese director of anime and former graphic designer. Let’s undertake the events which occurred in the love story.
The story’s narration started in the 1990s until 2007 centered around a boy named Takaki Tōno. He met a girl named Akari Shinohara whom he befriended immediately due to their same interests and attitude. They even have the same seasonal allergies. Their bond grew stronger over time until they graduated from elementary school.
Akari then moved to Tochigi due to her parents’ jobs but continued to keep in touch with Takaki by writing letters. Takari thought it would be the perfect time for him to reveal his feelings for her. So, he decided to write a letter of affection before Akari moved out with her family. However, in his journey to meet her, the letter was lost but still, they shared their first kiss together before departing.
Upon entering senior high school in Tanegashima, a girl named Kanae Sumida started to like Takaki. She was so in love with him that she spent a lot of time getting his attention. She wanted to confess her true feelings for him but was too shy to do so. Knowing that Takaki didn’t reciprocate her feelings, she then realized that he was still searching something far beyond her imagination.
Many years later, Takaki became a successful computer programmer in Tokyo. Akari, on the other hand, was about to get married to another man. The story shows how both of them reminisce their past love lives together. On one event, they recognize each other at the train crossing, a place where they’d actually decided to watch the cherry blossoms together 13 years ago. They’re shown stopping and looking back at each other but are interrupted with the passing train.
