5 Places You Can’t Miss in Beppu City

  • OITA
  • SPOT
  • The archipelago of Japan consists of four main islands, besides hundreds of smaller ones. Beppu is located on Kyushu, the southernmost main island. The small city is famous for its onsen (hot springs), as there are 8 geothermal hot spots below the city there are many of them. Every year, mostly local and some international tourists find their way to this relaxing place.

    Myoban Onsen (Hot Spring)

One of the 8 hot spots is the Myoban hot spring, and it is one of the most attractive onsen areas in Beppu City. The spot is very tourist friendly, you will be able to find guidelines in 4 languages (usually English, Japanese, Korean and Chinese). Almost all of the onsen are open-air baths. The place is located near the hills and customers can breathe fresh mountain air while soaking in the hot baths.

Every hot spring has its own unique characteristics and is supposedly beneficial for different parts and systems of the body. Most Japanese people love to visit hot springs, for their healing powers as well as for relaxation and de-stressing. In my opinion, this is one of the reasons why Japanese people might live longer compared to people in other parts of the world.

    Jumonjibaru Hill

Jumonjibaru Hill is located near Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, and it is considered to be one of the 100 most beautiful mountain views in Japan. From the hill, you can see not only Beppu city but also neighboring cities Oita and Hiji, and on a clear day you can even see Shikoku, one of Japan’s other main islands. I have visited this mountain both at night and in the morning, and I saw that no matter what time it is, you can always enjoy a beautiful view of the city and its surroundings.

    Beppu Matogahama Beach Sand Bath

Beppu is a city which is full of natural attractions. The Beppu Matogahama Beach Sand Bath is on of them. As its name says, it is a sand bath where every part of your body except for your head is covered with warm sand, which is said to be good for blood circulation, as well as for your skin. It is located near Matogahama Beach and you can enjoy a beautiful ocean view while getting a hot sand bath.

    Sanuki Udon Onaruto (Restaurant)

If you are a foodie and want to experience Beppu’s local udon (thick Japanese noodles), you should definitely stop by this restaurant. As a student, this was my favorite place to visit and enjoy very delicious udon. The staff is very friendly and to top it all off, the food is very cheap.

    Umitamago Aquarium

This aquarium is located between the cities of Oita and Beppu. If you would love to learn more about life under the sea, you should definitely visit this place. The environment of the aquarium gives you the feeling that you are truly in the ocean, and you will be amazed by the over 90 species of fish and other sea life in the main tank. Dolphin shows and other entertainment games make the experience a fun day out for the whole family.
