Japan’s autumn begins and many people will start to fall in love again with the quiet beauty of the changing seasons. Autumn leaves are at their most beautiful from mid to late November and Mt Takao can be a convenient escape for many autumn lovers. This is a great place and one of the single best spots for catching autumn colors near the capital. It is a popular hiking choice located within an hour of downtown Tokyo, and it offers cable car and chair lift rides.
I myself have been to Mount Takao several times. The first time I visited was in the summer with a friend of mine who also enjoys outdoor walks, and was mesmerized by the spiritual atmosphere of the mountain. But my next visit was in mid-November and once again I saw breathtaking scenery with the mountain filled with beautiful autumn colors.
If you become one of the mountain’s many visitors, you will also be impressed by the beautiful scenery. It also offers an interesting temple and well-marked hiking trails with eight hiking courses. From various points within its 599 meters, you can see views of Tokyo, Mt Fuji, and Yokohama. Near the cable car’s top station, there is an observation deck from where you can look over Tokyo. From the summit, you can see Mt Fuji on clear days.
Reaching the top, there are rest areas with tables and seats, vending machines for snacks and drinks, and a restaurant. The atmosphere is excellent for relaxation and the gorgeous scenery will give you the opportunity to take some of the best landscape photos. Also, don’t forget to buy some souvenirs for your friends and family!
This festival is a fun event that celebrates the beautiful momiji (maple leaves) and is scheduled from the 1st to the 30th of November. Many events are scheduled mainly on Saturdays and Sundays during the festival period.
Mt Takao is 50 minutes from Shinjuku station. From Shinjuku station take the JR Chuo Line (中央線), change to Keio Takao Line at Takao station, and get off at the Takaosanguchi Station(高尾山口).
If you need to get away from hectic city life and you have an outdoorsy spirit then you should definitely try visiting Mount Takao, especially in autumn!
