The Yokohama Akarenga Souko is a beautiful and historic symbol of the city of Yokohama. The building has undergone a number of tragic events from experiencing the Great Kanto Earthquake during the 1920’s and it was later even used as a military supply depot during the Second World War.
What was once a warehouse, now became an accommodation for various purposes like concerts and performances. It as well hosts many retail shops and dining establishments. While the beauty of both warehouses 1 & 2 has remained throughout the times, the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse becomes more beautiful at one special time of the year.
The Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse Christmas Market has become a yearly hit event in Yokohama 2017 marked its 8th year. In 2014 alone, there were 640,000 visitors and there are many things to be amazed at during this event. At the center of the market, a real-life 10-meter tall fir tree will be decorated with illuminating lights which will light up the whole venue in a magical winter wonderland-like way.
Around the fir tree, 19 German-style Hutte will also be set up with each having a must try selection of German dishes. Some of these would consist of food like Stollen or German Cake, traditional German Christmas Drink Gluhwein, German Sausages, and the well-loved Baumkuchen, not to mention many more food and drink choices.
This year’s Christmas Market has also made a collaboration with plush doll company Steiff to be official representative of Germany. There will be a display of some of the most valuable teddy bears the company creates as well as a photo taking service for those who’d like to have a photograph with these adorable toys.
The Christmas Market in Yokohama Akarenga Souko is an event where both families and couples can get to enjoy the night view of this beautiful place and also the German atmosphere portrayed. In 2017, this event will run from November 25th, and run until December 25th, so make sure you get there quick!
