5 Japanese Music Acts Who Are Famous Abroad

  • Japan has the second largest music market in the world, so it may not be surprising that some Japanese artists have achieved fame in other countries. Listed below are five acts – both solo singers and bands – who have gained quite a lot of recognition and international fans!


    Probably one of the most famous Japanese rock bands today, they are so well-known that they have their own concerts in the USA, Europe, South America and Asia. This band consist of four members, Taka, Toru, Ryota and Tomoya. They formed the band in 2005. Taka is the leader and vocal of the band and has an incredible voice and great charisma on stage.

    Miyavi (雅)

    Takamasa Ishihara, better known by his stage name Miyavi, is a famous Japanese songwriter and singer with a great voice, awesome guitar playing abilities and charisma. He is also an international star and a singer who has many concerts overseas in places like the USA, Europe, South America and Asia. Miyavi was born in Osaka by a Korean-Japanese father and a Japanese mother. He is a married man and has two children.

    L’arc en Ciel

    A rock band formed in Osaka in 1991. They were the first Japanese band to ever gain such international fame and they were the first to have their concert at Madison Square Garden in New York. They’ve sold almost 40 million records so far and are known to be one of the most famous Japanese bands ever.


    Gackt is a household name too. A famous Japanese singer and songwriter, Gackt was born in Okinawa in 1973. He has been active since 1994 and was the member of the band Malice Mizer during his career. His style of music is mostly rock, electronic rock, hard rock and pop rock.

    Arashi (嵐)

    This Japanese pop band was formed in 1999 and consists of five members who are extremely popular all over Asia. The members’ names are Ohno Satoshi, Sakurai Sho, Aiba Masaki, Ninomiya Kazunari and Matsumoto Jun. Some of them are also popular as actors. As of 2015, the group sold almost 30 million records and became the second best-selling boyband in Asia.
