Tokyo is definitely a metropolitan city with restaurants at every corner ranging from Michelin star wonders to small hole-in-the-wall joints that may only specialise in one dish, but do it very well. So, it comes as no surprise that there is a restaurant that serves the freshest seafood in the area. Especially when you’re the one who is fishing for it!
Welcome to Zauo! A concept restaurant in Shinjuku well known for their culinary expertise. The whole design of the restaurant is around the “river” or moat-like structure that literally runs through the restaurant itself. There are several seating options: one on the side tables overlooking the fish and another where you can actually sit in a boat! Seafood definitely does not get any fresher than this!
You can opt to have dinner served to you like any traditional restaurant, but if you want to be more adventurous, you can go fishing for your dinner! The tank is well stocked with various kinds of fish, lobster, and even shark. You can get a free rod from the staff and bait costs 100 yen. However, there is a catch (pun intended). As soon as a fish is caught you have to buy it, it cannot be returned if it doesn’t suit your taste buds.
Once you catch the fish, the on-site chef will cook it according to your preference (there are three available options provided) and served with several dipping sauces. On top of that, they are also able to prepare it raw as well. However, the fun is in the experience as the entire restaurant joins in the fun once a fish is caught, with a special chant of accomplishment. Also, note that the fishing experience only starts at 5 pm during opening hours of the restaurant.
If fishing for your dinner doesn’t take your fancy, then there are pre-set menu options available that offer many favorites such as soup, tempura, sushi and even salads, so there is something for everyone! So, for a once in a lifetime meal experience that is a blast for the entire family, check out Zauo restaurant and you won’t regret it!
