Are you looking for a special place to stay in Hokkaido not too far from Sapporo, with not only the most comfortable rooms but also the best food and drinks? Boutique ryokan ‘Otaru Ryotei Kuramure’ is one of the best small hotels in Japan, in fact, it is so popular that it has been awarded the Tripadvisor’s Traveler’s Choice Award for Best Hotel in 2016! The hotel’s construction began in 2001, and it underwent repeated renovations until it was perfect. It was officially opened in 2002 and has since been realizing the owner’s dream of creating a comfortable hotel with different integrated designs.
The hotel offers relaxing rooms built in traditional Japanese style. The rooms are super comfortable, which follows the hotel’s principle of a ‘peaceful stay’. There are 19 rooms available with various styles and decors from floor to ceiling. Walls have been decorated with traditional Japanese paper while the furniture is reminiscent of a revival of the Li and Ming Dynasties. Everything looks antique and natural.
Each room comprises of a living room and two bedrooms, and you can choose between a smoking room or non-smoking room. Hot spring water is directly accessible from the taps in the bathroom. Bedding is of superior quality and has been carefully crafted by artisans. Amenities include night clothes, Japanese socks, a kimono coat, face towel, toothbrush, hairbrush, hand towel, body towel, humidifier, dryer, a shaver with shaving cream, and shower cap.
The hotel has enjoyable facilities including a cafe and bar, tearoom, a library, and an art gallery. The restaurant serves the freshest local food for breakfast and dinner, a cuisine based on traditional Japanese style kaiseki cooking. The hotel bar has a welcoming atmosphere, and it is open daily from 8.00 am to midnight (small children are not allowed in this area). As in most ryokans, overnight guests get to enjoy all the food and drinks in the hotel for free, this is included in the room price.
The tearoom boasts a modern design, which makes it stand out from the rest of the hotel. You can use the room for free, but you have to reserve in advance. The library is a relaxing place to enjoy books as well as music records. The art gallery features artworks of Hokkaido-based artists from Japan as well as abroad.
For a small hotel, this place has the total package, from comfortable rooms, complete amenities, to astounding facilities. The Otaru Ryotei Kuramure has a great scenery where purity and stillness prevail.
