Japan has been no stranger to strange and creative food ideas. In the spring, McDonald’s Japan served plum seasoned sakura fries and the Sakura McFizz. However, most of these interesting food creations by McDonalds are mainly savory foods made readily available in all of their outlets. It is rare that Mcdonalds would create an area-specific item. They have managed to surprise us again by creating unique hotcakes.
The McDonald’s in Aichi Prefecture has unveiled a new hot food item, the Ogura Soft Hotcakes (小倉ソフトホットケーキ). The ‘soft’ within the name refers to the dollop of soft-serve vanilla ice cream that comes with the hotcakes. Aichi Prefecture’s McDonald’s will only be serving these items on the dessert menus of only 174 outlets in the prefecture, beginning June 6 until the end of the month.
Pre-sale of this item was made available in select stores from Tuesday, May 24, 2016, to Wednesday, May 25, 2016.
This sweet dessert features three extremely fluffy pancakes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a generous dollop of sweet azuki bean paste. This mixture is the perfect combination of hot and cold and will surely delight the palette. It would probably be even more delicious with a hot cup of coffee.
The sweet azuki on the hotcakes are commonly enjoyed within the region and are popular amongst locals. It is usually enjoyed as Ogura toast which features butter, margarine, and Ogura-an, a sweet red bean paste. Aichi Prefecture, including many parts of the city of Nagoya enjoy Ogura-an as one of the most popular foods.
The hotcakes will retail for about 360 yen (US$3.30) per serving, but with a small sized drink combo, it will come to 440 yen (US$4.00)
McDonald’s has said that there is currently no plan to develop items for a limited-time regional menu. However if there is a large demand from customers they may consider it, so if you are visiting Aichi, be sure to check these out!
