Hopeless Romantic? Here are 5 Japanese Live Action Movies That You Should Absolutely Watch!

  • Are you done reading your favorite romance manga and watching its anime series as well? Why not try watching the live action counterpart this time? Whether you are an otaku or just a hopeless romantic, these anime couples will definitely make you wish that you had a love like theirs! Here is a list of some romantic live action movies that would be perfect for you.

    1. Blue Spring Ride (Ao Haru Ride)

This is a live action adaptation of Io Sakisaka’s famous manga Ao Haru Ride. The movie stars Tsubasa Honda as Futaba Yoshioka and Masahiro Higashide as Kou Tanaka or Kou Mabuchi.

The heroine Futaba Yoshioka used to be known as the cutest girl in school but this, in turn, made other girls envious of her. This made it difficult for her to face other guys in school especially the one guy that she has feelings for, Kou Tanaka. One day, Kou asks her out on a date. Unfortunately, Kou doesn’t show up and Futaba ends up waiting for him. She then learns that Kou and his family moved out to another place.

Now that she is in high school, Futaba wants to create a new image of herself. She manages to act like a totally different person and make some female friends as well. While living contentedly, she meets Kou once again (now Kou Mabuchi)! He tells her that he felt the same way as she did when they were younger but that is all in the past now. Will Futaba be able to ignite the flame of their love one more time now that Kou has returned to her?

    2. Say “I Love You” (Sukitte Ii na yo)

Say “I Love You” is based on Kanae Hazuki’s shoujo manga. The movie stars Haruna Kawaguchi as Mei Tachibana and Sota Fukushi as Yamato Kurosawa.

Mei Tachibana is a high school student who has trouble making friends much less dating boys due to a traumatic accident when she was a kid. One day, Mei accidentally injures the most popular guy in school, Yamato Kurosawa. Girls around them started to get angry at Mei for hurting Yamato who was actually innocent. Feeling guilty, Mei gathers up the courage to apologize to Yamato. Yamato accepts her apology and ends up being her first friend in high school.

Then, Mei gets stalked by a customer after finishing her part-time job at the bakery. Yamato saves Mei by kissing her, therefore discouraging the stalker from further pursuing Mei. From that moment on, their love story begins.

    3. Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You

Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You became one of the most successful live-action adaptations in Japan. This is based on Karuho Shiina’s romantic shoujo manga. The movie stars Mikako Tabe (Sawako Kuronuma) and Haruma Miura (Shota Kazehaya).

As the movie progresses, it expresses the poignant story of friendship and romance between Sawako, sometimes called Sadako, and Shota. Kimi ni Todoke is really fun to watch as Shota tries to pursue Sawako who proves to be such a challenge due to her shy personality.

    4. Wolf Girl and Black Prince (Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji)

This movie is based on the manga series “Okami Shojo to Kuro Oji” by Ayuko Hatta. Fumi Nikaido plays as Erika Shinohara, a first-year high school student who happens to be in a situation where she asks the campus prince, Kyouya Sata (Kento Yamazaki), to pretend as her boyfriend. Surprisingly, Kyouya grants her request without any hesitation. Erika felt so lucky at first but gets the shock of her life when she finds out that Kyouya is actually the exact opposite of a prince! He intends to keep his end of the bargain only if she does whatever he tells her to do. This movie is actually quite interesting to watch as love slowly grows between the male and female protagonists.

    5. Strobe Edge (Sutorobo Ejji)

Like Blue Spring Ride, Strobe Edge is another manga written by Io Sakisaka. This is a great live action movie which stars the Japanese actors, Sota Fukushi and Kasumi Arimura.

This story revolves around Ninako who has feelings for Ren, the most handsome guy in school. Ren already has a girlfriend. Knowing this, she resigns herself to being just a friend and to quietly hold unto her feelings. This is a light movie that will make you fall in love with the characters’ personalities.

Don’t hesitate to watch these recommendations because these will surely fill your heart with joy, hope, and laughter. After watching all of these live action movies, there is one thing I could say about the heroines in Japanese live action movies – they are certainly passionate when in comes to fighting for love!
