If you’re familiar with the Japanese drama series “Nobuta wo Produce,” “Hanazakari no Kimitachi e” (“Hana Kimi”), and “Kurosagi,” then you must be also familiar with its main actress, Horikita Maki (堀北真希). Horikita Maki is a talented Japanese actress. She was born on the 6th of October in 1988 and she’s the eldest among three siblings. Aside from being an actress, Maki is also a model for photo books, Japanese fashion magazines, and commercials. She’s known for her commercial with TOKIO’s Nagase Tomoya for Fujifilm.
Horikita Maki’s breakthrough role is for the popular Japanese drama “Nobuta wo Produce.” She played as the high school student named Nobuko who was bullied by her classmates. Following the story, she gets help from her two best friends, Shuji (played by KAT-TUN’s Kamenashi Kazuya or Kame) and Akira (played by Yamashita Tomohisa or Yamapi) to be confident. A reunion and crossover scene were filmed in Kamenashi Kazuya’s drama series, Kaito Yamaneko, in which they re-enacted the scenes with the famous puns of “Nobuta wo Produce” like “Nobuta Power, Chuunyu!” and “Bye Bicycle!”
With her character in “Nobuta wo Produce,” Maki won the Best Supporting Actress Award from Japan’s Television Academy Awards. With all her exceptional work in her career, she was named as one of the “Women of the Year” by Vogue Japan in the year 2007. In 2008, she was cast with Yuzu’s Kitagawa Yujin in “Innocent Love” wherein she played as Akiyama Kanon who was shunned by the society because her brother was a suspect of arson. In the same year, Maki was cast in the film “Dareka ga Watashi ni Kiss wo Shita” or “DareKiss” which was based on the novel “Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac.” One-third of her lines in this film were in English. Fast forward to 2012, Maki was chosen to play a part in the NHK morning drama “Umechan Sensei” which garnered an average rating of 20.7 percent.
Maki recently married her fellow actor, Yamamoto Koji (山本耕史) in August 2015. She’s currently pregnant with her first child.
I first knew about Maki when I watched “Nobuta wo Produce.” I immediately loved her there and the drama itself! I got hooked into Japanese dramas more when I watched the said film. I also love her character in “Hana Kimi” and her role in “Innocent Love” moved me. She greatly portrayed her character in that drama series. I was also touched by her performance in “Always: Sunset on Third Street.” It was recently revealed that she’s pregnant with her first child so I wish her the best. May her pregnancy go well. I haven’t watched all of her dramas and movies but I’m looking forward to watching them.
