The Yo-kai Watch (妖怪ウォッチ) series has often been compared to Pokémon (ポケモン) and Digimon (デジモン) due to the similar premise of having a world filled with cute monsters. But the upcoming third installment of Yo-kai Watch will be done differently as it will be a mashup of anime and live action!

The story of Yo-kai Watch is about a primary school student named Keita Amano (天野景太) who upon going into a forest, stumbles upon a capsule and meets a Yo-kai (monster) named Whisper (ウィスパー). As a way to thank Keita for setting the creature free, Whisper offers to become Keita’s guardian. Whisper gives Keita a Yo-kai Watch which allows him to see and communicate with other Yo-kai.

Apart from the manga and anime series, there are also anime films of the franchise. The first anime film, “Yo-kai Watch: The Movie” (映画 妖怪ウォッチ 誕生の秘密だニャン! – Yo-kai Watch: Tanjou no Himitsu da Nyan!), was released in 2014. On the other hand, the second anime film, “Yo-kai Watch the Movie: The Great King Enma and the Five Tales, Meow!” (映画 妖怪ウォッチ エンマ大王と5つの物語だニャン！ – Yo-kai Watch: Enma Daiou to Itsutsu no Monogatari da Nyan!) was released in 2015. The third movie interestingly enough will be something a little different.
The latest installment of the franchise is entitled “The Flying Whale & The Great Adventure of the Double World, Nyan!” (映画 妖怪ウォッチ 空飛ぶクジラとダブル世界の大冒険だニャン! – Yo-kai Watch: Soratobu Kujira to Daburu Sekai no Dai-bouken da-nyan!) It is different from the previous 2 anime films, as this time, there will be a combination of anime and live action. The reason for the mix instead of a full-fledged live action adaptation is so that the kids who love the anime version will be more accepting of the new film.
The film is set to be released on the 17th of December, 2016 and will be produced by Hino Akihiro (日野晃博). The main character in the franchise, Keita Amano, will be played by Ryouka Minamide (南出凌嘉) and there will also be a new Yo-kai named Koalanyan (コアラニャン) that will be playing a vital role in the story.
The trailer has already been released which you can watch here:
From the trailer, you can sort of get an idea of how the combination of anime and live-action would turn out! So what do you think, is the hybrid a yay or a nay?
