Instagram has currently over 500 million users and more and more Japanese celebrities are joining this picture/video-sharing social networking site. Some of the latest additions to the growing number of popular Japanese actors on Instagram are Yamazaki Kento, Takayuki Yamada, and Nobuyuki Suzuki.
It’s only been a couple of months since Yamazaki Kento joined Instagram but his followers have immediately grown.
His Instagram handle, @kentooyamazaki, has 27 posts, 1.6m followers, and 12 following as of this writing.
There have been several fake accounts before Kento actually joined Instagram. So maybe to prove his authenticity, his inaugural post on June 22, 2016 is a video of him saying he’s officially starting Instagram.
Most of his posts include photos and videos from the filming of the concluded “Getsu9 (月9)” drama, A Girl & Three Sweethearts (Suki na Hito ga Iru Koto – 好きな人がいること). In the said drama, Kento plays Kanata (夏向), the middle brother of three and the chef of their own family restaurant which is managed by the eldest brother, Chiaki (千秋 , Miura Shohei – 三浦翔平). They also have a struggling younger brother, Toma (冬真, Nomura Shuhei – 野村周平). But in real life, Kento is actually a year younger than Nomura Shuhei. Moreover, the female lead in the drama is Kiritani Mirei (桐谷美玲). Kento has previously worked with her in the romantic comedy movie No Longer Heroine (ヒロイン失格).
I have some reservations regarding Kento’s acting skills, but I can’t shake off the Song Joong-ki vibes that I get from him and there’s no denying that his onscreen charisma makes him an in-demand actor to lead one manga-based movie to another – from L-DK (L♡DK), to No Longer Heroine, orange, Your Lie in April (四月は君の嘘), Wolf Girl and Black Prince (オオカミ少女と黒王子), and One Week Friends (一週間フレンズ。) which is set to be released in 2017.
Kento still has a long way to go but he’s continuously improving. As long as he is not restricted to doing the same shoujo prince characters and if he is given the chance to explore more intense roles, then he might just grow to become one of Japan’s best actors.
Speaking of which, one of Japan’s best actors, Takayuki Yamada, is also now on Instagram.
@takayukiyamadaphoto currently has 119 posts, 1m followers, and 2 following.
Yamada has been on Twitter for a while now and he also has an official Facebook account but it was only on July 9, 2016 when he decided to upload his first Instagram post.
Yamada’s real life sense of humor can be seen through his social networking sites. His Instagram posts include selfies, fanboying over Jin, and naughty pictures with Miura Shohei among others.
Yamada is one of my favorite Japanese actors of all time along with Shota Sometani (染谷将太), Oguri Shun (小栗旬), Eita (瑛太), and Masataka Kubota (窪田正孝). I saw him first as the otaku in the movie Train Man (電車男). From then on, I started watching his other drama series: Crying Out Love, in the Center of the World (世界の中心で、愛をさけぶ), H2: The Days with You (H2〜君といた日々), A Song to the Sun (タイヨウのうた), and the emotionally stirring, deeply impressive Into the White Night (白夜行).
Yamada continued to take various roles. From serious films to comedic series, he effortlessly jumped from one genre to another. He has worked several times with some of the most renowned directors including the prolific ones like Takashi Miike (三池崇史) and Sion Sono (園子温). He made me laugh out loud at his drama series, Yuusha Yoshihiko (勇者ヨシヒコ). In the hands of a different actor, that would have been extremely corny and cringe-worthy. But because it’s Yamada, I can’t help but be in awe with the way he keeps a straight face doing all those ridiculous things while delivering the cheesiest lines.
Yamada also starred in a movie called MILOCRORZE – A Love Story (ミロクローゼ) where he played three completely different characters proving his chameleon-like acting prowess. He gets a wide range of live-action characters like a mafia, samurai, alien exterminator, loan shark, manga editor, and even a star (a literal star in Arakawa Under the Bridge (荒川アンダー ザ ブリッジ))!
There is simply no limit to the roles he can play, but my favorite out of all of them is his Crows Zero (クローズZERO)‘s Serizawa Tamao (芹沢多摩雄). I’ve always been fascinated with the whole “yankii (ヤンキー)” culture in Japan. But while Oguri Shun’s Takiya Genji (滝谷源治) is absolutely “kakkoii (かっこいい)” or cool, Yamada’s Serizawa Tamao has equal amounts of dorkiness and badass.
Gekidan EXILE member Nobuyuki Suzuki joined Instagram on August 1, 2016.
It hasn’t been long ago but @nobuyuki_suzuki_official already has 240k followers as of writing. He has uploaded 38 posts and following 79 accounts.
The first time I saw Nobuyuki was in Kamiki Ryunosuke(神木隆之介)’s critically acclaimed 2012 movie, The Kirishima Thing (桐島、部活やめるってよ). But I didn’t bother Googling his name. He also played So (壮) in Shota Sometani and Masaki Okada’s Strayer’s Chronicle (ストレイヤーズ・クロニクル).
I finally got to know Nobuyuki through the High & Low franchise and I am impressed with his chemistry with the rest of the Sannoh Rengokai (山王連合会 – Hoodlum Squad) members, especially with Cobra (コブラ) and Naomi (ナオミ).
Nobuyuki Suzuki is born in 1992. He’s only 2 years older than Yamazaki Kento but their image is far too different from each other. While Kento has a young prince image, Nobuyuki looks mature and manly, suited for tough (even delinquent) characters. I am delighted to read the news that he will be playing First Class Investigator Kotaro Amon (亜門鋼太朗) in the live-action movie of Tokyo Ghoul (東京喰種) which also stars his High & Low co-star, Masataka Kubota.
I hope Masataka Kubota will sign up for an Instagram account, too. How about you? Are you already following your favorite Japanese celebrities? Who else do you want to see on Instagram?
