Popular Holiday Light Festival Draw 4 Million Visitors: Kobe Luminarie Celebrates 20th Anniversary

  • KOBE
  • This holiday light festival decorates Christmas in Kobe with elegance and charm. The first Luminarie was held in the year of the Great Hanshin earthquake. Today it is a seasonal attraction for the Kansai area and for all of Japan, bringing up to 4 million visitors a year.
This year’s Luminarie is expected to be even more beautiful than usual, since it is the event’s 20th anniversary.

The exquisite geometric arch of lights has a stately beauty with its subdued use of color. All the designs, which change every year, have a heightened air of dignity that creates a sublime space conducive to the offering of silent prayer.

The first Luminarie in 1995 was intended to be a one-off event, but supported by the enthusiasm of the locals and by many donations and commercial sponsorship, it has grown to become a major event in Japan. If you are visiting Kobe in the wintertime, it is one place you will definitely want to see.
