How we wish that Doraemon (ドラえもん) existed in the real world! So many of our problems could be so easily resolved. Sadly, this is wishful thinking for now, but all hope is not lost! The incredible technology of our times means that we can experience fantastical worlds through VR (virtual reality) from the comfort of a studio in Tokyo (東京)!
The latest popular anime character to jump on the bandwagon is Doraemon with the release of the Doraemon VR Anywhere Door (ドラえもんVRどこでもドア) by Bandai Namco (バンダイナムコ). If that wasn’t already exciting enough, Doraemon the Movie 2017 was released in Japan on March 4 2017!
Doraemon is an incredibly popular Japanese manga series by Fujiko F. Fujio (藤子・F・不二雄). In the series, a blue robotic cat named Doraemon was sent from the future to help Nobita (のび太), a young boy who gets poor grades at school and suffers from bullying.
Doraemon’s task is to help Nobita in order to improve the lives of his future descendants. This mysterious blue robotic cat stores many high-tech gadgets from the future in his special pocket, one of his favorites being the Anywhere Door, a special teleportation tool. This tool has given inspiration to creating a virtual reality attraction based on Anywhere Door.
The Anywhere Door virtual reality experience has been created primarily as an attraction for promoting the upcoming motion picture, Doraemon the Movie 2017: Great Adventure in the Antarctic Kachi Kochi (のび太の南極カチコチ大冒険), written and directed by Atsushi Takahashi (高橋敦史). Released on March 4th 2017, this is the 37th film from the Doraemon franchise.
In the film, Doraemon brings Nobita and friends to a huge iceberg in the South Pacific as they cannot withstand the sweltering heat in Japan. Here, they find a mysterious golden ring in Antarctica that was buried 100,000 years ago before humans could have lived there. Doraemon and his friends set out on a mission to find the owner of the ring.
