  • Fukuoka (福岡) is a famous sightseeing destination in Japan owing to its fascinating attractions. It is even lovelier during the spring season and many visitors flock to the city when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Different parks become painted in pink, making them ideal hanami or flower viewing spots. If you’re planning on visiting Fukuoka this spring, you can head to these three lovely and must-see parks.

    1. Nishi Park (西公園)

Nishi Park is a popular park known for its cherry blossoms. It has a commanding view of Hakata Bay (博多湾), a bay in the northwestern part of Fukuoka City. You can enjoy panoramic views here as it is the best place for viewing the city! Moreover, it has a shrine in the park which is dedicated to two Samurai rebels who helped in overthrowing the Shogun.

Around 1,300 trees can be found in Nishi Park, including Oshima cherry (大島桜; a widely cultivated ornamental tree), weeping cherry, mountain cherry, and Yoshino cherry (ソメイヨシノ; a hybrid cherry). You’ll get quite a view during hanami season as the trees are lit up between 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

There are also several food stalls along the walkway from the central entrance going to Terumo Shrine (光雲神社). Entering the place is free, so expect a crowd of people during your visit.

Katsuyama Park is located in the middle of the city and is popular for Kokura Castle (小倉城), a six-storey castle considered to be the tallest in Japan. The castle consists of countless cultural and historical artifacts highlighting the area’s history from over 700 years ago. It also has a tea room, a library, and an observation deck where you can see spectacular views of the surrounding place.

In spring, you can watch sakura blooming next to the castle which creates a beautiful picture. Around 300 cherry trees surround the place and are lit up during the season. It combines well with the light coming from the castle, making it look like a mystical world.

Katsuyama Park is just a 10-minute walk from Kokura Station (小倉駅) and the entrance is free.
