Have you ever dreamed of spending the night at a bookstore and reading all the books you want to read? How about cosplaying the whole night until you get tired? Or are you the person who wants to do both? JUNKUDO (ジュンク堂), a bookstore in Tokyo (東京), will be holding an event this 2017 where you can read and cosplay all night!
JUNKUDO is one of the main bookstore chains in Japan. Once you enter their store, you would immediately see shelves after shelves of books, but sometimes, JUNKUDO transforms into a hotel of some sort.
Back in October 2015, one of JUNKUDO’s Osaka branches held its first “Try Living in JUNKUDO” event wherein 10 lucky bibliophiles won the chance to spend a night in the bookstore and read to their heart’s content!
In October 2016, a similar event was again organized, but it was held in one of JUNKUDO’s Tokyo branches – the Takashimaya Tachikawa branch (立川高島屋).
With the success of their previous events, JUNKUDO decided to organize another one this 2017!
The newest installment of their event series is officially called “Won’t You Try Cosplaying at JUNKUDO? (ジュンク堂でコスプレしてみたいですかー？).” It will be held on June 10, 2017 at JUNKUDO’s Takashimaya Tachikawa branch. This branch is located in West Tokyo and opened for the first time in February 2016.
With over 3,305 square meters of floor space and an incredible estimate of about a million reading materials, participants will surely get to experience an unforgettable event. Participants can read virtually everything in the bookstore, excluding the reading materials that are already shrink-wrapped.
JUNKUDO is actually expecting a bigger turnout this 2017. From just 10 participants from their previous events, they have increased the participant size. The organizers are currently looking for five groups of up to five cosplayers and three other members (such as photographers and/or assistants). Participants should be 18 years old and above.
Interested participants can fill out the application form here (Japanese only). The event is absolutely free, but participants do need to fill out a survey and participate in the feedback session at 8:30 AM the next morning.
The bookstore will be accepting applications from now until April 10, 2017. Selected participants will then be notified by April 14, 2017. By applying in advance, cosplayers can be permitted to use the books available in the store as props under staff supervision. Other cosplay props can also be brought in. Specific details on this can be found on the official website linked below.
The first time I came across this concept was in Watanabe Mayu’s (渡辺麻友) drama, Fight! Bookstore Girl (戦う！書店ガール), wherein the bookstore held a similar event in an attempt to save it from closing. This kind of unique event is sure to attract many book lovers and cosplayers. The bibliophiles would have no problems with getting lost in all the books and the bookstore would really be heaven for them. Cosplayers, on the other hand, will probably have to use their creativity and imagination so that they can have a productive cosplay photoshoot. If you are interested, make sure to send in your application soon!
