Enjoy Fireworks, Dragon Boat Race, and More at This Summer Festival in Osaka

  • Summer is here once again, and in Japan, it is also a season for festivals and grand fireworks displays (花火; hanabi). Usually, you can experience these colorful events from July to August, but if you are visiting Osaka (大阪) in June, you can enjoy one of the earliest summer festivals!

    Takaishi Seaside Festival (高石シーサイドフェスティバル)

Takaishi Seaside Festival is an annual event held in early summer. For 2017, it is scheduled on June 18. There will be many activities all throughout the day such as stage events, a dragon boat race (ドラゴンボート大会), and fireworks. Here are six of the event highlights!

    1. Stage Events

Mascots and local performers will be setting Hamadera Park (浜寺公園) in a festive atmosphere during the festival. There will be a mini concert, games, and other engaging activities to entertain the festival goers while waiting for the fireworks display at night. The stage event will start as early as 4:00 PM at the children’s playground area of the park.

    2. Flea Market

Flea markets are becoming more common in Japan nowadays, especially during festivals and events. If you are visiting Osaka, the flea market during this festival is one of the best places to buy souvenirs since all kinds of Japanese goods – from the latest clothes and toys to local and unique handicrafts – can be found here.

    3. Street Performances

During this annual event, Hamadera Park is a place where you can see lots of street performers. Talented singers of different genres, comedians, dancers, and other sorts of performers can be seen at the park all throughout the event. They all contribute to the cheerful and vibrant atmosphere during the festival.

    4. Ice Skating

A skating event called “One Coin Day 2017 (ワンコインデー2017)” will also be held on June 18, 2017. It will start from 11:00 AM and last until 5:00 PM at the Osaka Rinkai Sports Center (大阪府立臨海スポーツセンター). You will be able to enjoy skating for only 500 yen which already includes the rental fee for the skating shoes.

New to ice skating? Don’t worry, there will be instructors to help you learn how to skate so it will be safe for beginners. The Sports Center is located not too far from Hamadera Park, and is only a two to three-minute walk from Takashinohama Station (高師浜駅).

    5. Dragon Boat Race

This is one of the main events during the festival and it is hosted by the Takaishi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (高石商工会議所), co-sponsored by the Sakai Senboku Chamber of Commerce (堺泉北港港湾振興連絡協議会). The dragon boat race has three categories wherein teams will compete. The event will start at 8:00 AM and end at 4:30 PM at the Osaka Prefectural Rowing Center (大阪府立漕艇センター) which can be seen on the Hamadera Park seawall.

    6. Fireworks Display

This is the most awaited part of the festival. The sky will be lit with 2,000 different fireworks which will be set off from the Hamadera seawall near the baseball field.
