Will There Be a Real-Life Mario Kart at the Upcoming SUPER NINTENDO WORLD in Osaka?

  • SPOT
  • You must have already heard of the upcoming collaboration between Universal Studios and SUPER NINTENDO WORLD. Although there’s no actual date when it will be opened, Universal Studios Japan (ユニバーサル・スタジオ・ジャパン) wants the plan to materialize before the opening of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo (東京). Part of the plan is the rumored opening of a real-life version of Mario Kart (マリオカート), a series of go-kart-style cart racing video games which was developed by Nintendo (任天堂). Though there’s no official confirmation yet, fans all over the world have been eagerly awaiting fresh hints on what the attraction will look like.

    What is Mario Kart?

Mario Kart is a video game series which has been marketed and associated with the Super Mario (スーパーマリオ) series. The first in the series was Super Mario Kart which was launched in Japan in 1992 and in Europe in 1993. It included characters that were previously seen in Mario Brothers (マリオブラザーズ). It became one of the best-selling games of all time which sold about nine million copies worldwide.

A total of five Mario Kart games has been released for home consoles. To date, its latest series, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (マリオカート8 デラックス) for the Nintendo Switch, has sold millions of copies worldwide. Compared to the previous series, it has more characters and has a lot more options for Battle Mode.

The Mario Kart series allows each player to control a selected character and compete in the race. Up to eight players can compete in each race. There are many courses in the game based on the Mario franchise, Mushroom Kingdom and Rainbow Road. Every installment features a variety of different modes (Gran Prix, Time Trial, VS, and Battle).

    The Rumored Attraction

SUPER NINTENDO WORLD is a planned area that will include Nintendo-themed attractions in Universal Parks & Resorts. This plan was a result of Nintendo’s efforts to expand its intellectual properties as it has been struggling to compete with rivals like Sony’s (ソニー) PlayStation (プレイステーション) and Microsoft’s Xbox. This was first announced in May 2015 and is expected to be finished in Osaka (大阪) just in time for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. It is hopeful that people will also want to visit the area of Osaka during this time.

The plan is also expected to expand to the Universal Studios parks in Orlando and Hollywood. Word on the street is that SUPER NINTENDO WORLD will include a real-life version of Mario Kart. In relation to this, there will also be interactive attractions, shops, and much more.

Based on an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto (宮本茂), co-Representative Director of Nintendo, and Mark Woodbury from Universal Creative, some of the things to expect are a Super Nintendo Hotel (スーパーニンテンドーホテル), restaurant, and even a Christmas tree. Many fans are looking forward to its opening with some expecting high-quality go-carts which families can enjoy.

Expect to see a creative and imaginative world from Nintendo with the SUPER NINTENDO WORLD. It is dedicated to providing spectacular experiences to different people. Fans can’t wait to see Mario Kart characters and stories be brought to life in entirely new ways!
